I have a 1996 Stratocaster with vintage-style tuners. The previous owner bent one of the tuners(high E) and it is in need of straightening. Has anyone ever done this before? The shaft is bent at an approx. 15 degree angle at the base of the shaft, just before it enters the tuner casing. It works perfectly, and holds the E string in tune, so the worm gear is not damaged inside. I was not sure if I can re-bend it to original position without damaging the tuner. Should I remove it from the guitar first? Should I heat it up to make the re-bend easier? Anyone who has done this before, let me know what results you had. I don't want to invest in 6 new tuners to fix this minor problem. My local repair guy has no spare part for me to swap, so no luck there. Thanks all you Stratophiles!!

I think you can buy individuals online, but my advice is if it aint broke dont fix it. If i works great fixing it seems like an unneccesary risk to me. that's just me though... hey if people ask, tell them it's a one off by Chris Fleming and it's supposed to be that way  .

I'm with Joe on this - if you try to straighten it you're likely to make things worse and you could end up with it loose and bent! If it still works, leave it as it is and call it 'character' :)

A few weeks ago I also bent my high E tuner (dropped my strat on the floor). I pressed the tuner housing back down, but I didn't straighten the peg, I left it alone. I didn't want to make it worst and it wasn't bent all that bad anyway.

If yours is not bent bad, you should leave it alone, if it bothers you that much try to straighten it, if it doesn't work, buy a new tuner or a whole set, whichever you can.

Don't heat it whatever you do. there's a plastic bushing in there and it could melt, then you really will need a new tuner.

A pic of that would be nice.

I have a bent tuner on a` 63 Gretsch that I damaged myself when I was about 16...( 59 now )..I just restrung it today and it works like nothing is wrong and still holds the guitar in tune. I`ll have to agree with the others, if its not broke...don`t fix it.

It can be fixed, but if you don't have the experience, I'd suggest taking it to a tech or replacing the set with these :

My E turner is also bent. It still works fine and adds a lil character too.

Unless you are concerened about keeping your strat as original as possible, I'd get the Shaller locking tuners. I have an Am Deluxe Anniversary with them and they hold like crazy.

I can go back a week later (in the winter!), fire up my Strobebosoft and all strings but the low e will still be "caged"! Amazing!

Yeah, every line tells a story, ask Keith Richards' mirror... I had a bend e-tuner on my EC for years, it still worked fine so I didn't care. Don't take the risk of getting it worse.

Cheers!
