So I've heard a lot about Japanese strats - they're supposed to be awesome n stuff, but then the USA ones are the USA ones.

In your humble opinion, what's the best one?

I have the option of spending £519 ($1035) on a brand new alder texspec Japanese, or £440 ($875) on a 2nd hand USA all stock (It's in great condition, but I'll have to ship it from America).

Any help received would be really really appreciated.

Thank you! 8)

Sit down and play them. Pick the one that plays, sounds, and feels the best to you.

I own a 1984-87 MIJ Stratocaster 72RI and I love it. It is a fine instrument. I also own a 1990 Fender USA Strat, and love it too. Buy what feels best in your hands, and don't worry about its origin.
I own Strats from USA, Japan, Mexico, and Indonesia. Although they are different, they are all good guitars. Go with your heart and ears!!

If you haven't played either, I would say the USA strat.

Every overseas strat (Japanese,Chinese,Korean)I've ever owned in a lifetime was far more needy of adjustments and upgrades than any American Strat I've ever owned.

Better quality on america's Strats. Fenderules!

If you can play both of them first...do that and then decide.
If not, I'd go with the American...You'll most likely feel better about purchasing the American one anyways.

I just bought a Strat made in USA..Nothing holds the value like an American made one. Save up and get one made here, its worth the wait if you can`t afford it now.

If you're going to play it and not keep it under a bed, then try them both out and see what you like. I've played American Strats that were dogs as well as Japanese. I've even played pre CBS Strats that were tome turds.Get what you like. I wouldn't worry about it holding it's value. None of the production guitars will probably ever go up in value because there are just so many of them. Supply and demand.

I hear the electronics are a bit weak on Japanese models.

Other than that they are supposed to be awesome, but if you can get a USA one for less money, i would definately go for that.

I'm not too sure about that. They sold a lot of Japanese instruments.
There were a lot of rumors around. The one's I played were really nice and there was nothing I noticed weak about the electronics. You really have to try stuff out for yourself. Tone is just so subjective. I've played many, many guitars in my geezer life. Some great, some not so great. Strats were all over the place tonally especially during the 60's and 70's. Not all 70's Strats were dogs, not all 60's Strats were gems and not all Japaneese Strats had weak electronics.
A lot of folks think if it wasn't made here, it's junk. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I would have to say the japanese fenders are amazing. I have played alot of japanese guitars and just love the way they make guitars. I curently have 2 esp m2's 1 standard and 1 custom shop and now 1 japanese fender strat (1985) i did play quite a bit of strats before purchasing mine and took me a while to find a vintage japanese strat. But I would agree that the american strats play very good i really wouldnt trade it for the feel of my japanese strat.
