I use 'em all the time. My practice amp is a Valve Junior- no tone controls so I learned that what comes out of the guitar is where the real tone differences can be made. #2 the sound and tone of some pedals is influnced by what comes out of the guitar and you can't get the same tone from by adjusting at the amp. FWIW my pedal chain is fairly simple: Vox Wah to tube screamer (TS-9) to Boss trem (TR-2) to the amp. About half the time I leave out the wah.

EC suggests turing the tone pots anticlockwise on a Fender Strat.

when i'm looking for a heavier, distorted sound, i'll select the bridge and middle piick ups together and turn both tone knobs all the way down
