Hey gang, Help me out.

I scored a sweet MIM Strat over the weekend. The serial number dates it to 1990. It's basically in new, unused condition. A few swirls on the pickguard. The neck and body are flawless. It's a real closet classic for being a 21 year old guitar. Black, w/ rosewood. The pickups are pretty generic and I'm thinking about something different.

If it was a Tele, I'd know exactly what I have and how I want it. But being a Strat, I've got too many knobs, switch positions and pups to deal with!

I'm thinking either Fat 50's, CS 54's or 57/62's. If I remember from discussions here, the trem block is nothing to write home about either. Give me some ideas on upgrading this little beast. I think it would be a fun project.

I'll play mostly 50's/60's rock w/ this guitar, hence the choice for pups.

Any ideas? Help a brother out!

Thanks,

RickyD

Each of those pickup sets offers some nice vintage mojo for your preferred style of music. A careful mix-and-match (a la Martian's "fratocaster") might also be a worthy cup of tea. Those, combined with a steel trem block and a good set-up, should put you on the right track.

Congrats on the new guitar, HTH

Congrats on your find,I have a black/rosewood MIM Strat and it looks rich. The 57/62 pups would be a great choice. The whammy in MIM Strats take a bit more twiddling than the MIAs and I find that they hold their tuning much better decked as opposed to floating with the only disadvantage being that you'd be unable to pull back to go sharp.

One of mine is a '91 MIM with a 7.25" radius and two Texas Specials along with
a Duncan JB SH-4 in the bridge position with a steel block. It holds tune very well
even with 3 springs and moderate trem use. The picture is old and grainy, the guitar is old and a screamer :
