As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

Only if drinking coffee from McDonalds in which case an insulated lap guard is also required.

LMAO: I stand corrected!!!

+1

What are people using for irons that they think that a heat-sink is required? Common sense people!

Many people aren't aware that using a heat-sink when soldering will require more heat, as the sink will pull the heat away from the component, making it more difficult to solder. Using heat-sinks for soldering is unnecessary except for a few rare instances. You would be better off spending your money on safety glasses instead of heat sinks. Not much in an amp or guitar that can be damaged while soldering, except for the insulation on wires, and in that case a heat-sink won't help.

Components are soldered in at the factory without the use of heat-sinks, and no components are damaged by it. BTW, you can leave your soldering iron on the back of the pot all day and you aren't going to damage it. Search for a post by nikininja where he used a blow torch on a pot and the internal parts were undamaged at all by the heat.

So, where would you attach a heat-sink to a transistor before soldering? To the case?

You know, I used to hear motorcyclists say that wearing a helmet made it harder to keep your head from hitting the ground in an accident because of the added weight. That makes about as much sense as saying a head sink endangers the equipment more.

Factory soldering is done by robot machines with precisely calculated heat, solder and timing. It is established in advance, where every factor is known. That's nothing like a technician or user working ad hoc in a one-off situation, where all of those factors must be guessed at.

Transistors have leads. Clamp the sink to the lead. Aluminum heat sinks look like a very flat clamp, no more than a 16th of an inch wide, easily small enough to get between a transistor's solder point and its case. Same for diodes.

30 years and never needed to use a heat-sink, and never damaged a component while soldering, including transistors and ICs. No one said that using a heat-sink would "endanger" the component, just that using one makes it more difficult to solder. And, trying to use a heat-sink on the leads of a small transistor in the circuit is near impossible if any other components are nearby, which is almost always the case. A heat-sink should not be used to try to compensate for poor soldering skills, or trying to use an iron that is much too hot.

And no, the factory soldering isn't precise anything, they run them through the process as quickly as possible, often at the expense of good solder joints. No robots used either, maybe you are thinking automobile assembly. I have repaired many wave soldering machines or the associated equipment, and I set them up for good soldering, leaving the components on the wave long enough for proper heating. And after every successful repair, the production guys would come along and dramatically speed things up which often resulted in poor joints.

BTW, those that argue about whether or not a helmet will protect your head are idiots. I lost a good friend just two months after the helmet laws were relaxed in KY. He hated wearing a helmet and always used the dumbest reasoning for why they were unnecessary. He wrecked his bike one night while enjoying his new "helmetless" ride, hit his head on a rock, and died a week later. :(

If you can't participate in a forum discussion without resorting to personal insults, I suggest you spend your time doing something else. No one here has resorted to such a tactic until you. Don't waste any more of our time with your snide remarks.

keep the "debate" clean here fellas. this could very well turn out to be a learning thread for anybody who reads this. :)

My apologies. I will edit it out if I can.

But we do agree on helmets.

its always good to read a post where folks disagree in my opinion. this way you get to see both sides and different views ya know.
