I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a good strng for Surf/'rockabilly type playing.

I recently purchased my first fender (MIM Strat) and I am wondering why I didn't get one years ago, but when I put new strings on it the other day they maxed out the springs on the back. I usually use a heavier gauge because my other guitar has a bigsby style bridge.

Thanks for any suggestions and I a looking forward to really dialing this sweet new axe in!!!

you probably went with a heavier gauge than was installed on the guitar to begin with.

I would suggest taking it to a good guitar shop that you trust, and having them set it up. Let them know what gauge strings you plan on using, and they'll adjust the tremolo springs, the intonation, and the neck (if needed) to the new strings you're using.

If you decide later that you don't like those strings, and want to go to a heavier or lighter gauge, guess what?!? You'll have to have it set up again.

Strings don't make the tone.

Strings are actually part of the overall tone (sound) of any guitar.

Finding the right string and string gauge to get the tone you want can take some time and lots of experimentation.

I have in the past went and bought different brands and gauges of strings and a notepad. I used one set of strings for about 3-5 days and keep notes about everything about them. Then went on to other sets. I continued on this for weeks until I decided on the strings I use now. Now it is just a matter of deciding what gauge I want for any new guitar I get.

Just remeber that when you change the gauge of your strings you may be altering the intonation of your guitar. A fender Guitar is set up to an exact specifaction at the factory, which is outlined in the manual you received when you bought it. Upon changing to a larger gauge, you may have to adjust the bridge to keep it 100%

If you go to heavier gauge strings it will involve more than just the trem springs. You'll probably need to have the truss rod and intonation reset and possibly have the nut slots redone to accommodate the larger strings.
