a strat with some tex-mex pickups, tuned down a 1/2 step (Maybe more? Someone help me out here) with a bass string on the low E rather than a guitar string, and a WHOLE LOT OF SOUL

Well, the SRV signature has texas hot SC pickups, so I would go with something with those... Have you considered the Jimmie Vaughn Sig.?

Buy an old one and beat on it until one of you is bleeding. LOL!

Listen to "Life By The Drop". He's not playing that on a 'Strat' but it still sounds like him. Get my drift?

1ST: buy the best sounding Indonesian Squier-alder body, jumbo frets, decent tuners, you get my drift.

2ND: buy true vintage VanZandt pickups from Texas

3RD: buy GHS Lowtune nickel rockers, you can find them online: they are----11-15-19 plain-26-36-58......these are the strings SRV used when 12's were hurting his fingers.

4TH: find someone with a nut file to widen the nut for the strings .....tighten the strat's tremelo almost all the way using five springs.

5TH: tune the guitar to Eflat.

6TH: run that thru a Fender amp and tell me all about your killer tone.

That may set you back maybe $350.00.......I've done it several times with really good results, make sure you oil the proper places for great action and feel! what's even better is since your not cutting of a leg or arm to invest you can do most of this yourself!

Yeah, you're right. It doesn't take expensive gear to get a Hendrix/SRV tone. You can get damn close with just a Highway One and a cranked wide open Super Reverb or Vibroverb. An awful lot of SRV's tone comes from saturated power tubes and his style of playing. You could have every piece of gear that SRV used and still not sound like him if you don't approach the guitar the same way he did.

Let me tell you a true story.

On an SRV tour in 1989 the opening act was The Stray Cats. The Stray Cats guitarist Brian Setzer had added The House is Rockin' to the Stray Cat's song list before this tour.
During one of the shows Stevie invited Brian out to play that song, Stevie handed Brian his #1 plugged into his amp and away they went. After the show Brian commented that even using SRV's gear he still sounded like Brian Setzer.

SO, even having the right gear ain't going to make you sound like SRV.

any mexican strat would probably do.... a good deal of your tone will come through an amp and any pedals if you have any

"Approaching the guitar the way he did"

EXACTLY.....I once met the bass player he had before Tommy Shannon. I can't remember his name....I met him at a music store in Garland,Texas. He said every night he played with SRV,the man played ""like it was his last note while standing on the edge of a cliff". In short, he gave it his all.I really wish he were around to see and experience the stuff Fender has produced since 1990.He would surely be in the middle of things!

The reason I mentioned the VanZandt pickups before is because they do not lack the "boils" or bottom end....some of these newer pickups lack.SRV's guitar tech was "rumored" to have installed VanZandts on some of his guitars. I cannot prove or disprove that remark.Even heard one was installed in the the neck position on Number 1....................

I gotta go with the Van Zandt suggestion. Those are great pickups, creme of the crop. Jimmie Vaughan uses them, so that should tell you that there's a good chance his brother was using them a long time ago also.

I agree with the other stuff too. A plain ole' strat with some big strings through a tube amp is all you'll ever need, that should get you about 70% of his tone right there, the other 30% is nothing but touch and emotion. No need for overwound (hot) pickups either, a good neck pickup is a must, but not neccessarly a hot one.

I've heard the new upgraded Highway 1's have a great blues/rock sound, though i haven't tried one myself yet. :D
