Hi there I'm thinking you've answered your own question. It seems you are using a non standard switch and you've wired it to the fender spec. From the "oak" illustration you've wired it incorrectly. Rewire it or replace it with a std fender switch. Hope this helps :D

Yup, I agree. Wiring an Oak switch to the CRL diagram is wrong.

The wiring looks OK, but a shorted cap would explain everything.

Look at the photos of the switch wiring, then look at the two drawings of the Oak and CRL switches. The two switches are different. It looks like the OP has an Oak switch wired as a CRL switch and that appears to be wrong.

Thanks for confirming what I thought. Next week when he brings the guitar over I'll redo it again, correctly. Third time is the charm.

I see it now, good eye. The bottom half of the diagram wasn't showing the first time that I saw it (using dial-up at the time), didn't know there were two switch drawings. Thanks for pointing that out. :)

Credit should go to jimmy_james. He noticied it first. I just confirmed it. :D

Hey thanks to you both! Team effort I'd say. The only problem with taking the credit is you also have to take the blame if it doesn't pan out as it should
As you'd know if you're there with a voltmeter etc it can be easy but it is hard with just pics! Anyway I'm hoping we've solved it and if not back to the drawing board :D

Well, I'm back. I got rid of the OAK switch and I'm using a CLR. I was having problems with it anyway, I couldn't get it to move to the 5th position.

It's working now, I changed the cap out, I put in a .022uf. I know that is what is normally used for humbuckers, but every diagram I have seen for single coils listed them. I am using a shielded wire for the 1/4" jack, and I have a feeling that the shielding may have been touching the cap. Regardless, it's working now.

Thanks

Well at least it is okay now so that is good news. A shorted cap to ground via the shield could certainly be the culprit as suggested by shimmilou but the switch wiring seemed wrong as well. One way to know would be if you changed the switch and it was still faulty it would point to the cap.. :D
