I own an american Delux 'Fat Strat' HSS that might be a 2000 model. I noticed others talk of the S-1 switch they have. When was the S-1 switch introduced in this model? Can I retro fit, should I retro fit?
Thank You.

the s-1 switching was adding to the am. dlx. around 2004,

i don't think it's necessary, besides, i don't think that they sell the s-1 switching pot, you'd be better off just leaving it alone IMO

I have read a few reviews of the S-1 system, the concensus was about 50-50. Maybe I'll replace my Fender Humbucker with a SD instead. In reality, I'll probably just leave the guitar as-is since I never play it anyway. Thanks for the quick reply.

I too have '00 Am Deluxe Fat Strat. No S1. I've played them at GC and they do give wider colorization possibilities. If you're looking for more output consider EMGs.

The S-1 system is pretty cool and offers a handful of nice options. Although from what I understand the S-1 seems completely designed around those pickups and way complicated. I've heard reports of some people swapping their pickups and either breaking the S-1 or not being able to get it to work properly again. As cool as it is I'd be willing to part with it if it meant I could easily swap out for some Duncans or something.

I have an Am Deluxe with S-1 switching. I really like it. Push the button on the volume pot and suddely gobs of bass! It's like getting another five tonal settings on your strat!

I now own one of each. My 1997 has no S1, my 2008 has the S1. The 1997 weighs in at just over 5 lbs. The 2008 is a tank. They both sound great. The 1997 is routed H-S-H! I'm just going to keep em both.

If you wanted to, you could buy a S1 array in the after market segment. Check out fleabay.

Good luck.

There's no American Deluxe in 1997. The series was introduced the following year.

One explanation is Fender completed the first batch of American Deluxes during the last weeks of 1997 and your axe was possibly among those.

Well, John C can shed us his light about your guitar.

Well that's what the serial number translates to. I have never popped the neck off to check; but I did get a copy of the build sheet from Fender using the serial number. Game over. I'll have to take another look. It even has one of those mini Floyd Rose bridges, which I dislike and took off and replaced with a standard American Deluxe high polish bridge with the pop in tremolo arm.

Thanks for your reply.

I've always hated the S1 switching. I don't find the series sounds useful, they sound like bad single coils rather than humbuckers. And the switch itself is a cheap piece of plastic that looks like it fell off a 1970s transistor radio.

You really can't go by serial numbers on Fenders - even when they were the most "on track" they didn't change those decals until some time during January of a given year, and that means necks that were completed in January, not necessarily entire guitars.

American Deluxes did come out in early 1998. I suspect some of the first of them did have N7xxxxxx serial numbers since Fender typically starts doing runs of new models they are going to introduce at the January NAMM show in November/December of the prior year so they can fill orders taken at the show and avoid the old joke that NAMM really means "Not yet Available, Maybe in May". I would suspect your neck and body dates are either December 1997 or January 1998.

Since the model wasn't introduced until about March of 1998 you might as well call it a 1998 model and ignore the serial number "dating".
