you could use tinted fishing line just for the effect of strings.
this way you can pick the sizes you like that work. or you could use violin

That is a GREAT idea!!!!!! Thanks!!!! I'll totally do that!!
but now I'm totally discouraged due to the quality of the LesPaul miniatures posted above :(

I had an alternative idea. Leave the guitar alone and build a half-scale player for it instead:

yes it is of good quality. dont worry what the next man does, worry about yours.
yours is just as nice in my opinion. when you worry about the next man thats time, emotion, and stress, all energy wasted that could go into your next project.
oh if you like the fishing line idea, you could always buy clear and tint it yourself. thats what i do.

Ceri, I want the big one for the front of my house !!! A music store here in the area had a big Tele all lit up out front of the store for the Christmas season and it looked great. I'll be there is a market for that!

Now to put on my Sales Hat - although there has been some great discussion of cost based pricing, I think the real focus here should be market based pricing. Because if you look at the hours involved, component cost is negligible. Once you put a $ value on your time, your price starts to get very high. This is really art and the only way to make a profit, is to think of it that way. Do a little research for similar items and their prices like the great guitar model above. You might even contact the guy who makes it and inquire. Artists love to talk about their art and since it is not a Fender product, you will not be a competitor. Then establish a price based on what the market will pay, not on any of the costs. If your happy with the number - go for it.

I learned a long time ago that cost+ pricing leaves a lot of $ on the table. But be realistic.
Nice job and good luck.

Hi Cambo: that's all very good advice. Except - I've always found "the market" invariably thinks things should cost a helluvalot less than a realistic price for the time involved, not more. For instance, this very Forum is periodically flooded with guys feeling highly aggrieved that Fender won't sell them an American Deluxe guitar at the price of a Far Eastern Squier.

Very, very few "artists" in this world get paid an hourly rate as good as your average bank clerk. Sadly.

To happier things:

How's this for ya. In this photo the guitar is in fact a normal 4/4 size one. However, the people and all the surroundings are skillfully constructed miniatures:

I find that palm tree especially convincing. 8)

Ceri, You are right on about the "markets" expectations. It always amazes me how people develop their price expectations. They seldom, if ever, factor in the effort, creative or artistic value, risk, sweat etc. that goes into a product. Unfortunately cheap, low quality off-shore product has created a horrible baseline for creative products. If jmacbain wants to succeed in making a few $'s on his lovely creation, he will have to determine who it is that will pay the price. If nothing else it is a good education for other adventures.
Oh, I love a good marketing discussion (although no one has ever really nailed down for me exactly what it all involves). I sold a technical product for almost 40 years.

Man, I would love the big guitar but no one could see my house behind it. Maybe next year I will make a small on for the front lawn. An honorable project!

Cheers from Milwaukee. It was 18 degrees F here this morning.

Ceri and Cambo, Thanks very much for the great advice and I don't figure that I'll ever retire on my $$$ from building scale guitars I just don't want to give them away and I certainly don't want whoever would buy it to feel ripped off. My hourly time is almost a non factor because I love doing it so much and it is a hobby and I'd be doing it anyway. So that's why I asked for advice, now I have a pretty good idea of demand at least. (Seeing that nobody was offended by it or laughed me right off the forum) :D
I'll definitely keep all posted as to the fate of the model...

Cheers from Chicago, it wasn't much warmer here.
