Wait, didn't Jimi overdrive his amp in Monterrey?

Your friend might be onto something.

Isn't it remarkable what you can get people to believe?

well with some of these screamo bands, all you can hear is overdriven guitar (and annoying screaming, but thats beside the point)

but no, my amp has overdrive built in, its not going to do anything bad....actually, if an amp can take this http://youtube.com/watch?v=qStMR55qx4o it can take anything within reason

Jimi had Marshall stacks
THE epitome of Overdrive
but he also had an arbiter fuzz so he had some umph
but an overdriv will not hurt your guitar
to high a votage spike to the input resistor of your input will fry you amp
but this is usually from a bad ground or unplugging before turning off the amp.

The guy at school has no idea what he's talking about. Effects like overdrive and many others are designed to shape your sound. Almost everyone uses them to some extent. Look at all the effect pedals, and amps with built in effects on the market.
