Hi everyone. I'm Ted from near Manchester in the UK. I have played Strats and Teles for ages. Icuding a '64 blue strat bought new (wish I still had THAT!!) and a home made Tele. See if you can guess exactly what my current baby is. The only clue:- It is a real fender with all original body parts . Image Image Image Image Image

Welcome!

At a glance, its some kind of RI because at the very least, the genuine US 68s and 69s didn't have two narrow string trees, the position indicators were all larger and closer to each other on the 12th fret, the tremolo arm was shorter, the knobs and pickup covers certainly wouldn't still be the same color as the pickguard by now, the body appears to be basswood, the patent numbers were larger and IIRC, there were more of them.

How'd I do?

I believe it is called a Stratocaster.

I'll also guess a Japanese '68 "RI".

There's no fooling you guys then. It is an MIJ '68 re-issue. I thought the logo might have thrown you . On MIJ '68 re-issues, the Fender's a goldenish colour with Stratocaster in small , straight lettering . When I got it (1990), the Stratocaster bit was kinked under the laquer and the frets were really small so at the first opportunity, I had the neck refinished and re-fretted, but the guy who did it used urethane and after a month, there were cracks all over the neck where it had reacted with the nitro still in the grain so he did it again in nitrocellulose and had to put a transitional logo on as he'd run out of '68 ones. I really like it because it fills the headstock better and while it was still off the guitar, I added a few more coats (17) to the headstock face to "sink" the logo in level. The neck feels really glassy smooth on the edges and the pickups sound really good. Ted
