It's the waiting until May 4th that's the hard part!! I have severe GAS (includes equipment too) so waiting a month until stock at MF replenishes leaves me way too much time to try to get my fix at the expense of making a sub-standard decision.

Like I've been telling people for decades now: Once exactly what you want becomes available, not only will you kicking yourself in the $@! for not waiting, but the components you bought in haste will quickly become resented. As exasperating as it may be, sometimes you just have to forget about certain things until the time is right. YMMV.

I'm certainly finding that this is the case! Though I'm close....like 79 2/3 of the way there, I can't seem to commit.

Then do NOT commit! Just keep gathering information; you'll know when to, "pull the trigger".

Not sure if you saw my post on the other thread re my pups, but here's where I'm at:
The fine tech folks at DiMarzio (and the DiMarzio pickup picker tool) said I should go with this combo - Chopper-bridge, Area 67 -mid, DP409 - neck. I'm pretty happy with the idea of a chopper in the bridge, area 67 in mid, but the neck is still hanging me up. My guitar tech and several others on the forums have said that the DP409 (virtual vintage heavy blues 2) is going to be too dark for the neck. The DiMarzio people consistently suggest the DP409 for the neck with this configuration. I've gotten several other independant neck suggestions such as DiMarzio injector, seymour duncan SSL-5, Area 58 (or 67), etc.

Truth is, I've come to realize that I'm not a good enough player yet to distinguish if any of these would be better than the other so I'm of the mindset right now to just pick one and be done. There are bigger decisions in life!

I mean absolutely no sarcasm in anything I'm about to say:

I saw the post but I didn't read it because typically when it comes to pickup recommendation threads, the bottom line (as will be in this case) is that the when the requester has any preconceived notions, (s)he can receive a thousand recommendations yet is no further ahead and ultimately, must makes up his/her own mind. Usually they go with their initial notions any way.

Seeing that you asked though, IMO, frequency and volume wise, you're going to be all over the place. The Chopper will make your Strat sound like an SG, the 67 will be an extreme volume drop from the Chopper and an extreme increase in treble as well, taking your guitar to the furthest extremes of a late 60s Strat's tonality; the 409 will be pretty much on par with the Chopper volume wise but it is going to be one huge, muddy mess up there in the neck position which of course, makes it contrast with the 67 all the more. At the risk of being redundant, see, this critique puts you no further ahead.

Quite the contrary. I'm looking for this type of feedback and opinons from those with significantly more experience than myself. I think the problem is that I'm seeking to cover too many tones with the same instrument and that the combo of those 3 pups would be a mish-mash of tones, ultimately being ok at some but not great at any.

What I probably need to do is commit to a smaller range of tonal variety and then go with a matching set of pups (i.e., Area 58, 67,61 or Texas Specials, or DG-20, etc.) that will achieve that desired sound. Maybe I simply can't have the same guitar (with effects pedals) that will allow me to play a range from Knopfler to Gilmour to Halen to Hendrix to Pearl Jam to Beatles. Unlike my own personal musical tastes, maybe I'll need to have a few guitars each specifically setup to hit a narrower range of styles.

Perhaps the strat with it's traditional SSS setup should just be for specific strat sounds and my music man with a HSS configuration should be used to hit the dirtier throater humbucker type sounds (and the Dean with its dual humbuckers will just sit in the closet since I don't play metal-ish tunes).

See, it appears that YOU are in fact, zeroing in on YOUR requirements and expectations!

Chopper - bridge
Area 67 - mid
Area 58 - neck

Guitar tech will mod tone so bridge is wired to one and either neck and mid are on same or mid bypasses tone altogether. Still doesn't address your point about the volume drop when going frim bridge to mid though unless my guitar guy has a solution there.

He wouldn't unless he permanently wires the Chopper in parallel which defeats the purpose or jacks up the Areas as high as possible on the pickguard with the Chopper being flush with the pickguard.

FWIW, if it were me, I'd put a 61 in the bridge, a 58 in the middle and the 67 in the neck. I'd wire the 61 to the lower tone pot and the 58 and 67 to the upper tone pot.

Thanks so much for the thoughtful answer. I appreciate the help and advice.

Any time!

I put EMG gold on my 1983 MIA Strat on 11- 4- 2011. I tried a few different pick ups over the years and just could not pull off that Strat sound. These are great for vintage tone with a nice hint of blues. The battery is good for a year or more. Changing it is a nasty event. They never fit right and things get unplugged. I looked on this forum because I need a wiring diagram, I had two things get loose and I got trouble.
Good pups but!
