Hello,
I have seen some guitars online that include a key, looks like a normal key, I was wondering what is it for?

Don't let that scare you. Guitar cases are easy to break open. They are built cheap :P You can pop most latches open with a flat head screwdriver used as a pry tool. Anyway, most of my guitar case keys look identical.

Most Small Padlock Keys Will Work Just Fine Or Use A Bent Paper Clip. That Way You Won't Damage The Lock.

It's mostly the G&G tweed and tolex cases this happens to; actually the shipper doesn't lock them but one of the locks gets bounced to the "locked" position in shipping. They are universal; the key to the case for my '79 Lead II also fit the locks on any Fender G&G case I've ever had, including that 2008 CS '56 Strat I had last summer.

You don't have to worry about that with the molded cases; they have different latch mechanisms.

MAN ! Thank you ! I've owned my strat for two and a half years. NOW, I can finally play it (always wondered where that dang little key went).

Man Andy, I can imagine a key going right in the top of that sucker and having to crack it over to get it going...... and having it sound like tuned exhaust headers on a mean machine!

Maybe you should explain to us what is going on "under the hood"????

When I first started out in this business, the owner of the store I first worked at would tell the customers to throw the keys out because if they lost them, they'd have to break the case open and equally of note, if someone was intent on stealing your guitar, they would surely steal it case and all.

The only reason I would keep mine in the case is just in case (hey, there's a play on words) I sold the guitar and case, the keys to the case wouldn't be a key issue (man, I'm on a roll) with the new owner.
