am i the only person who doesn't like 9.5" radius stratocasters? it seems like all models have gone to the flatter finderboard. i love that 7.25" radius of the older strats. i would consider one of the hot rods, a new american standard, even other models if they didn't have that flat fingerboard...

is this really everybody's choice?

I have one of each and I must say I prefer the 7.25 over the 9.5

How old?

I have a Fender 1986 MIJ '72RI with the 7.25 radius and I like it more than the 2006 upgraded Highway 1 with the 9.5 radius.

i'm just asking in case the newer players never actually had a chance to play an older guitar and were raised on the 9.5" radius ideal. all of the fender literature about their choices for fretboard radius calls it "a concession to the modern player".
as somebody who's been playing for many many years, i'm wondering who these people are and if fender is really correct in assuming that everybody wants the flat fingerboard. i sure do not. this is actually preventing me from buying newer guitars.

I'll step back and wait to see what others think.

I've been gigging professionally since 1970, owned a '63 Strat and a mid-60s Tele, was forced to play a complete dog of a '58 in country sessions( 'cause the producer figured it had to be awesome, seein' how it was "vintage"), and have played hundred of vintage and reissue guitars.

I prefer my 10" - 16" Warmoth compound to anything I ever played, because I play cleaner on a flatter board.... probably a holdover from my performance major in classical guitar at Jordan College.

The radius shouldn't prevent you from enjoying new guitars... Why not just buy a reissue?

I can only speak for myself, but I really dig the 12 inch radius on my EJ. It's a breeze to play. I think you can get used to any shaped neck given time. IMHO

yes. i play several different guitars as well. they are all different and one adjusts to each of them. for a stratocaster, i have always much preferred the classic radius. i didn't even think about it until recently when we got a 1999 amercian standard as a back up guitar. i must say, i really don't like the feel of a strat with that flat a fingerboard. it's a different guitar.

for comparison's sake, my main was (until stolen a few years ago) a 1971 strat. i use a '72 and a franken-65 as studio instruments and a 62 reissue live. mostly.

i have only newer strats, but the few older strats i have played with the more curved fingerboard felt good as well.... it would take a bit to get used to, but nothing major i don't think... i have big hands as well so i think i can generally feel comfortable playing most size and shape necks

I really have no radius preference ... give me any radius and I'll adapt to it within a minute or two.

About the only things that would bug me are if the action is way too low, way too high, or the string spacing is way too narrow.

I'm the same way. But I do like the 7.25" radius, it just seems to feel 'right' for a Fender. For me anyway! Probably because that's what I'm used to.

Sure. I probably have more guitars with a 7 1/4 inch radius than anything else; going back to my number one.
