Soldering isn't too difficult to tackle. I swapped pups in my mim strat and made it through the process. You'll need to get a good soldering iron and good solder. Take some time and PRACTICE. Always tin the ends of the wire you are going to be soldering before hand. If you put too much heat in one area for too long, you'll have problems. Try to make sure the solder joints a nice and shiny. If they look dull, do them over. It means you'll develop cold solder joints and could lead to problems later on. I'm sure someone with more experience than I will come along and offer more advice.
Let us know how you make out.

All of the above is good advice....BUT! If you're using lead free solder, don't expect the solder joints to be shiny!

Lead free solder can be seen as a small step towards a little more safety, in exchange for A LOT of frustration. Just because it's very difficult to know if it's a cold solder joint or not, especially if you've just gotten into soldering.

I suggest just get the stuff with lead in it. Because honesty, there's not much to worry about as far as lead poisoning as long as you have something to blow the fumes AWAY from your work station, and you are in a well ventilated area.

I like to use "thin rosin core solder". WITH lead! Not lead free.
Rosin core solder is great because you do not need to buy a separate package of rosin flux.

What is rosin flux? It's basically a compound that helps with solder flow and smoothness upon applying the solder to the surface. It also provides an airtight barrier around the joint to prevent corrosion from occurring.

Howdy!

The following is ripped from my build thread.... I've edited a tiny bit...

Soldering.

I'm no expert but this is how to solder Big Hairy Style! I'm going to use the Bridge S-1 Tone Pot to demonstrate this.

Now then, I was taught to make sure that there is a good mechanical join before soldering.

As you can see in the above pics that's what I've done. The wires are tightly rapped round the pot lugs and are totally secure.

Image

Not the best result show below, but the bloody camera was in the way!

Image

Once the join is soldered there is less chance of the connection coming loose during those over shoulder throws and Townsend style windmills we all like to do! :D

Once its soldered we can add a small piece of the heat shrink tubing. Now, this is totally optional and the only reason I'm using it is to make everything looks tidy. Actually when I think about it, its probably quite handy if your packing lots of stuff in a small space as it should stop any bare wires or soldered joints contacting each other and causing problems later.

Image

The tubing shrinks down to size with a few passes of a flame from a cigarette lighter. Just be careful not to hold the flame over the wires for to long or you'll end up with a nasty mess.

I use a 25w Antech Soldering Iron but I can't remember what brand solder I've been using (I thinks its Tin & Lead mix).

Using lead free solder is fine for guitar wiring.

Hope this Helps

Andy

Unless you wish to coil tap the humbuckers, just make sure they are soldered together and the bare end taped off.

Job done. :D

Good luck & keep us posted on how you get on!

Andy

I recommend you practice first on some scrap electronic parts. Remember this: Prolonged heat on any terminal is not good as it will melt the insulation around the wire(s) and/or fry the pot or switch you are soldering to.

Yep,it's very easy for beginners to apply too much heat,I use several different irons and my favorite is a 40 watt Weller,I can get on and off pretty quick with it...for small stuff I use a 25 watt.
