hello

i've got a squier cv 60s strat and am going to change the pickps soon. i'm going for a set of tex mex and was wondering, do i need to change the pots and caps from the stock? if so, which would you recommend? play blues and rock mainly but also bit of pop and country when noodling. also, by the time i've forked out for pickups, fitting and caps etc, is it going to be worth it cos is this going to cost the same as the guitar? i love the neck on this guitar and amazingly stays in tune despite a fair bit of richie blackmore trem hammering. the current pickups are alnico v and as its a vintage set up, i don't have any control over the bridge pickup. is it also worthwhile getting the middle tone wire wired to the bridge instead so that i can wind down a bit of edge off the bridge - i do like this pickup but its a bit thin with o/d

thanks for your help

Welcome!

Although the pots and cap in Squiers aren't the best out there, yours is a classic example of, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." So no, don't bother changing them unless something is defective with them.

Now instead of of removing your lower tone pot from the middle pickup so the bridge pickup can have a tone pot, you can add that tone pot to the bridge pickup and still have it work for the middle pickup too. All that's needed is one little jumper wire added to the pickup selector switch.

You're quite welcome!

I would continue to use the stock original pickups as they are decent. Also, the original pots and switch will hold up well. I also have the tex mex and they are decent too. The cost will be about $70-$85 fr the pickups, and if you can find a good deal you can get the pots and switch fo about $20-$25. But I would use the pots and switch untill they are unserviceable.

All I'm saying is if you are upgrading your pickups, Might as well upgrade everything else while your at it. If you can change your pickups, you shouldn't have a problem changing your pots, caps, switch and jack. and on a squire???? 8)

I consider this to be terrible advice, why if I followed it I wouldn't have 4 more guitars torn apart than the number playable at my house... oh wait...

I always replace the pots and caps when I change pickups. The pots and caps get clogged with the electrons from the old pickups and don't let the new pickup's electrons through as easily. The guitar tends to sound "congested".

Seriously, though. I do change them. All of my pots are CTS with CRL switches and Orange Drop caps. I also replace the output jacks with Switchcraft mil-spec jacks as they fit better and stay tight longer than the stock jacks. I'm an engineer. I love to tinker. :D

Ok thanks for all your valuable advice. I'm going to stick with the pots and caps for now and change em when they're busted. Can't wait for the new pickups! Gettin em next month. Will report back.

You'll most likely end up selling that squire before that happens. The stock gear on that guitar should be Just fine. 8)
