For even more confusion, I think that some early Fender literature referred to the 3 selector switch positions as "Rhythm Tone", "Normal Tone" and "Lead Tone" (didn't have 5 pos switch back then). I guess that rhythm is neck, and lead is bridge, maybe?

Yeah I read something about "deep rhythm, normal rhythm, and lead" something like that. :?
And yes, rhythm is usually the neck pups, like marked on a Les Paul.

I think that "deep rhythm, normal rhythm, and lead" was a hold-over from the Telecaster. If you've ever played an AV '52 Tele straight from the factory it's wired so you have the neck pickup with a cap that rolls off all the treble in position 3, the neck pickup with the tone control in the middle position, and the bridge pickup with the tone control in position 3. I suspect Fender didn't change the literature for the Strat when it came out.

 To me that's more confusing than anything, because I select the position for the tone that I want, and use all pickups for lead and rhythm. Some rhythms sound better using the neck pup, and some sound better using the bridge pup. When using drive I find that the bridge is better for rhythm, and the neck better for lead, but the opposite is true for clean playing. I am more of a numbers guy, maybe that's why I prefer 1 and 5, to lead and rhythm.

see, im different. (no comments guys lol) when in lead breaks i like the neck and bridge to be the tone for my solo's. the middle position is where i like to play rhythm. im so set on that that i remove the 2&4 positions on my 5way switchs and use them as a mute of sorts.

Who cares about this 1-5 stuff people play other guitars than Strats.
Keep it - Treble/Middle/Bass or Bridge/Middle/Neck if you have to and noone gets confused.

I tap the pickup magnet with my pick while the volumes up on unfamiliar models.

Well in all the years that I've been playing, I'm still trying to figure out what pushing those dots all over the fingerboard is supposed to do. :?

This was in Stratocaster owners manuals when Strats only had three way pickup selector switches. It even went on to say that because the bridge pickup was a "lead pickup", no tone control was required.

I was taught essentially the same thing--the tone of the note is going up when you move toward the body, so you say up the neck. Tone of the note goes down as you play toward the nut, so you say down the neck and I have confused many "guitarist" in my twenty years of playing trying to explain that.

Fires candy into the audience, the closer the dots are to the body the more candy they get.

I didn't get a memo on this. Having that knowledge would have been nice.

I am pretty sure that the fret board dots are for the "gun/guitar" option that very few have. Just look at the cover of the Ted Nugent - Weekend Warriors album to see what the option can do. Or even the banjo/gun that the character "Banjo" used in the Zapata movies with Lee Van Cleef. The dots are on most all models of guitar in case you want to add the option.
