UPDATE: Finally got through to Fender. The Paisley Strat was indeed assembled in August of 2008. And yes, they did start to recycle the serial numbers.

Hi,
Recently acquired a MIJ Pink Paisley strat from an acquaintance. He claims to be the original owner and he says he purchased it NEW in either 2006 or 2007. Problem is the serial on the neck is T 035*** which indicates the guitar was made in 94-95.

The guy I got the guitar from no longer has store receipt but he is adamant about having bought it new a couple of years ago. And the guitar really doesn't show any signs of being a 16-17 year old guitar. Truly looks like a newer one.

Is it possible that a made in Japan Fender would have an "old" serial number yet still have be only 3 or 4 years old?

Next time I change the strings I'll take the neck off and see if there are any date stamps on the neck and body.

Yes. That and Fender's own site tells me via serial number that the guitar is 94-95. But my friend swears that he bought the guitar new a couple of years ago. I'm tried calling Fender today but got a but got the recording that they have an high amount callers and to please call back later and they hung up.

When do guitars generally have the serial numbers applied? After they are assembled? I suppose it's possible the neck of my strat could have sat around the japan factory for 17 years with the serial number stamped on it and then was used on the guitar as it was assembled in 06-07???

HMMM Interesting...some pics of the serial numbers, neck stamp, etc., might help us...come up with a closer date.

I do doubt that a neck sat around a factory for 17 years with a serial number. Something seems fishy here. Not calling out your friend...but information and pics are always helpful.

Maybe someone else has a good idea about this one?

I agree. It's doubtful that neck sat around that long. Here's a link to pics of the guitar.

Don't have pics of the neck stamp yet. As mentioned in my OP, I'll check that out next string change, which will be very soon.

Thanks

I bought my 1991 62 reissue MIJ Strat new in 1996. I didn't realise until I got it home and did a search.
It was in fact 'new', as it turns out, but somehow lost in storage.
I was very pleased, as it is one ace guitar.

From the photos it is the second issue of this guitar, the first series had the big 70's style peg head with 70's style Fender Stratocaster headstock decal...this one has the second issue small style peg head and vintage style decal...the first ones came out in early 90's, the second one came out in 95/96 or so. Also the first issue had a paisley pickguard as well, while yours has the later white pickguard. I guess it is possible that it was build during the serial numbers time frame and could have sat in a music store for a long time and was then sold as new...nice guitar hard to believe it could have sat around that long. Either way great looking guitar, enjoy it.

Maybe someone else with more specific knowledge can help you out, I am tapped out.

The answers to this problem are:

1) those serial number search engines are not up-to-date, because
2) the "Crafted in Japan" serial numbers started over with A.
3) A "Made in Japan" T serial number was indeed made in 94-95 (I own such a Tele).

Does this guitar say "Crafted in Japan" on it?

One snag to this story is that, recently, Japanese guitars have started being stamped "Made in Japan" again. That means the serial number alone might only get you within a decade ... because they are going through the alphabet again, repeating serial numbers.

Orvilleowner...No the picture shows Made In Japan...and with what your saying about the T serials it is most likely a 94/95/96....once he looks into the neck pocket (or maybe if he is lucky the end of the neck by the body is penciled w/ a date, as some where).

If it says "Made in Japan," then it could possibly be a recent T serial number based on the "snag" in my previous post.

Fender Japan has gone back to saying "Made in Japan" AND are reusing serial numbers from the '90s.

I wondered about the possibility of repeating serial numbers. I'll try getting through to Fender again and see what they have to say. If they are repeating numbers it would be nice if Fender would update their Japan serial number page to somehow reflect this. Right now the page only goes up to 2005.

On a side note, someone earlier mentioned the pickguard. The guitar did come stock with the paisley guard, and I do have it. The original owner put on the white guard as seen in the photos. I haven't decided if I'm going to put the paisley guard back on. I was actually thinking of trying a black guard or a gold one, just for fun.

OK, I took the neck off the guitar today. Unfortunately, there the neck itself does not have a date stamp. But the body does. See pics:

Based on the date stamp in the neck pocket of the body, my guess is the guitar was assembled sometime after Aug. 6, 2003 or 2008. It is extremely difficult to tell from the photo but the the date stamp just below the ST362 reads 08. 6. 0? - there is definitely a single digit number following the that last zero but is is faded and very hard to make out. I think it's either a 3 or an 8.

Well that is going to make our lives that much more difficult

Still all in all a great looking guitar...now you have to find a Blue Flower one to go with it

Recently, at the Denver Guitar Center, they had a set of both strats and teles of the Pink Paisley and Blue Flower models from the 80s (I think 88 but I could be wrong). They sure looked cool, in great cosmetic shape, but they didn't feel as nice as my Paisley. Of course I could just be telling myself that so I would feel better. Plus I thought they were a bit overpriced.
