Greetings,

I'm trying out a new Fender American Deluxe V which comes with the new N3 noiseless pickups + S1 switch.

I play using a Princeton Reverb Reissue amp.

I'm not sure how to describe the sound but every setting i come up with is lifeless. I cannot fine the warm blues, the crisp leads, the country twang. It's all missing.

Is it a N3 vs PRRI ?? Anyone out there that has the same combo & feels good about the sound?

Thanking you in advance, Frustrated Larry...

Does the amp sound pleasing with another guitar?

Hello Frustrated Larry, and welcome to the forums! Image

I can say from testing the Deluxe with N3s, they indeed have that sort of dire lifelessness you wouldn't desire in a Strat. ;-) People like it for it's noise-reductive quality, but in my humble opinion this pickup has no sparkle or depth whatsoever. Don't ever let the marketing devisions fool you - trust your ears!

Enjoy your time on this forum! It's a great place to be! :)

Hi Marc (I remembered! :))

I have a bunch of links to emoticons in a text file on my PC. Every time I feel like posting one I copy and paste the link to the emoticon and treat it like a picture ("Img"). Here's a few, but you can get more from plenty of sites out there offering free emoticons.

I don't think it is the Princeton...my Clapton Strat has the Lace Sensors, and just a few weeks back I tried out a new Clapton Strat with the Noisless pickups and I'll be honest it did not have that same power...the tone wasn't bad but it was very different than the lace sensors, which to me had more push to them.

FWIW

I tried a Deluxe and found the N3's to be a bit too much like Vintage Noiseless for my liking. I much prefer SCN's over either for a noiseless pickup.

What people don't realize about all these pickups; N3, SCN, VN, HN. Is that they are all humbuckers. They are in no way singlecoils. The only thing singlecoil about them is the size. Where a regular humbucker would have one coil next to another, these 'Noiseless' pickups have one coil ontop of the other. They will always sound like a 2 coil pickup, or a humbucker. They will never sound like a true singlecoil pickup, because they do not have a single coil, they have a dual coil.
Then you get singlecoil sized humbuckers that are quite genuine about what they are. Like the Dimarzio and SD rails type pickups. They show 2 rails running parallel to each other on a singlecoil sized housing.

If you want a singlecoil sound, buy singlecoils and learn to love the hum.

Yes, but: since the coils are stacked, there is no phase-shift involved. Means: they don't sound like a humbucker, they sound like something on their own. More like single-coil than a normal humbucker.

Cheers

I beg to differ. They sound nothing like singlecoils, any of em. They sound far more like very weak humbuckers with a overly emphasised treble and lack of attack. Except for Vintage noiseless that have a load of attack on a anemic overall sound.

Funny aint it. Of all them humbuckers, the ones with AlNiCo magnets sound the worst. Just to put the magnet nonsense in it's place before it arises.

The only nearly noiseless pickup that is a true singlecoil is the Lace Sensor.
