Thanks for showing up Martian. :)

I did not know Les Paul dissed the SG from the get go.

No flaming from me - that was a very informative post...

I e-mailed another reputable repair shop in my area, explained the issue and asked how much it would cost for them to work on the nut slots if that turns out to be the problem. I am still waiting to hear back from them...

Thank you to everyone for your input - it has been very helpful. I'm probably going to check out some guitars this weekend!

Thank you!

I would venture to guess that the reason you haven't heard back from them immediately is because they too know they can't guarantee solving your problem for all the aforementioned reasons.

On a lighter note, I'll bet you could bag a nice Strat with the SG as a trade in!

One of the guys I play music with wants an SG really bad. I'm gonna show him this thread next time he comes over. . I was planning on getting a LP in the future. I didn't know about these problems. I'm glad to have read this thread. Think I'll just keep playing Strats, the best geetars ever to be made. Nothing compares to old Leo's design. :)

:) Well if your friend wants an SG really bad that's what he will get...an SG (really bad)!

LP's are soild instruments, but I have had two Customs and a Standard and I would rather play a strat any day. And yes, nothing compares to Leo's design!

Every dog has its own particular genus of flea, be it a Strat, Tele, LP, or SG.

That said, I prefer the Strat platform now -- primarily since it seems to better accommodate my "geezerly" physique.

I have to reiterate that I don't have any tuning problems with my Epi G-400 Custom that's basically a copy of the '61 S.G. bodied Les Paul.I know that most S.G.s are plagued with tuning problems as is my daughter's boyfriend's Gibson S.G but mine appears to be an anomally.I don't know how many pieces are in the neck and/or if that would make a difference or if it's the fact that I use 8-38 strings but it hasn't given me a minute's problem yet I do agressive bending.

If I remember correctly, that's a bolt-on neck with Ping tuners and bridge. Structural stability would be better along with better tuning and more tracking distance of the saddles for more precise intonation.

Contrary to popular belief, MANY Chinese CNC made guitars are nothing to scoff at.

The G-400 Custom is a set neck with gold-plated Grovers,Alnico Classic and Classic Plus pups and the locking Tune-o-matic/Stopbar bridge/tailpiece assembly. She's the top model of Epiphone's SG bodied guitars but has the Les Paul connotation.Even confirmed Gibson Les Paul players remark on the obvious higher quality of particular guitar I have and I must admit that she's of better overall quality and tone than some newer Gibsons I've played lately. As I stated before she may be somewhat of an anomally but then again some very high quality guitars have been coming out China and Indonesia in the past few years.

hehe, Mexico isn't part of Central America!!(All central American countries are on the North American continent anyhow.) Mexico is strictly North American, maybe even moreso now as there's no longer really a border between your two countries!

I bought an SG last year I loved the sound and the neck felt great. But it also went out of tune alot. I also had a 60,s Classic LP in Honey Burst it was beautiful but went out of tune alot also. The only Gibson I ever owned that stayed in tune was my Lucile.

i'm with guitslinger on this one , i have a mic epi sg400 and very rarely does it need tuned , than again about the only stock bits left are the body , nut and tailpiece , the grover tuners got swapped out for kluson ones to try and address the neck diving tendencies , it's got a gohto bridge , all rewired with vintage style wire in 50's wiring scheme with cts pots and pio caps , and to finish off it's got a set of gibson 496 / 500t pups , i love this thing to death and another good point is when my back is giving me grief it's nice and light 8)
you don't sound too happy with your sg , trade it for a strat and pick up an epi sg400 , they can be picked up for a right good price 2nd hand , cheers
Alan

I have no more problems with my Gibson SG....because I no longer have it! I picked up a new Fender American Special Mahogany HSS Stratocaster and love it. I am still getting used to everything but so far it sounds and plays fantastic and most of all...STAYS IN TUNE!

I have to get used to a lot of things (the S1 is new to me...I've never had locking tuners before so it will be weird when I restring it, etc.) but this guitar seems excellent.

Thanks for the help (and for listening to me whine about my SG!) and no more Gibsons for me.

I think a lot of the tuning problems with Gibson 3 a side headstocks is to do with the nut slots.

Look at this. Compare it to a good design.

Image

See the way the A&B strings angle up to the tuner slightly. Then look at the D&G strings. That is a ridiculous angle to have on the headstock side of the nut. One slight misdemeanor with the nut slot cut and you can bet the D or G string is going to manifest real issues. (the G string is where I always noticed tuning issues the most on Gibbo's)
Add the thin body SG design to that and Bob's your auntie's live in lover.

Sorry mate. I can't accept that if it was a design fault Gibson would have sorted it out by now. Look all the other 'Vintage Correct' problems they insist on keeping on the guitars. Not that Fender are any better with their vintage correct instruments. But atleast they don't include it on 90% of the catalogue.
