I wonder if someone could explain what the S1 is doing when it is engaged and the 5 way is in the #2 position. I have a Delta Labs effects unit and a lot of the patches use a noise gate. There's a couple of patches that when I use the S1 and #2 position, it completely rolls off the high E string which is really weird when it happens. I'm just trying to put a correlation together on what is happening with this combo. Thanks

That does help because I now know that I was looking at the 5 way backwards. So what I'm really asking about is when the 5 way is in position 4 and the S1 is on. This gives you the middle and bridge pu in series with a cap (as described on the sheet that came with my guitar). I guess I'm wondering what does the "cap" do. It seems to affect the highs and when combined with a noise gate, rolls off the high E completely at some settings. I appreciate the help, I'm just trying to understand my guitar better.

So, this is very interesting. I'm now at home and I pulled out the "Control Description" sheet that came with my guitar. It shows the 5 way switch as being in the #1 position when it is all the way down and the #5 position when it is all the way up. This is the opposite of the sheet in the above link which is on the Fender web site. It's just a matter of semantics since the selection of pickups is in the same order. It just makes it difficult to discuss various selections. Which way do most of you guys consider the 5 way to work, is 1 up or down?
The setting I'm asking about is one up from the bottom, with S1 engaged, it selects the middle and bridge pups in series "with special cap". What exactly does the special cap do. Has anyone else noticed that this setting when used with a noise gate can completely eliminate any sound from the high E string? If not, I'm here to testify, it does!

I looked at the service diagrams that Fender has on this site. The last one was from 2005. They all show the numbering of the 5 way switch with #1 in the up position. I also see that they have changed the pup selections with the S1 switch engaged. I'm going to post a jpg and of my Control Description sheet just so you can see how they've changed. I don't know why they changed the numbering sequence of the 5 way.
