I just purchased a small Marshall practice amp.
It sounded great in the store when i asked for a demo however when I got it home and plugged it in I notice a constant hiss coming from it. is that normal?
It still sounds good for a solid state amp, I'm planning on a tube amp in the future.
This is all still very new to me and just trying to figure it all out.

There may be something wrong with your house's electics.
Go to a friend's house and plug it in there.

A constant hissing sound is not normal, take it back...

Did you use the same guitar at the music store? Cheap cord possibly?
If there is any doubt take it back. Bring your guitar and cord with you when trying an amp to buy. Good Luck!!!

I'm guessing it's the power source or your eq settings. Turn down the gain a bit and try another outlet, just a guess..

The humm or hissing may well have been there in the store too but with all the background noise (unless you went to a quiet room) may have masked it.

Just a thought. Like others, take it to the store with your guitar and cable, plug it in and see if it still does it there.

Like everyone else has said, you need to try to test every item in the chain:

1) Try different guitars
2) Try different cables
3) Try different outlets
4) Try a different house

You're talking about an electric current that's coming into your house, through the home's wiring, through the amp, through the cable, into your guitar, and then back out the way it came.

Or it could just be a lousy amp.

Good luck!

Did you have your amp near another piece of electronic equipment like a TV,computer, anything with an electric motor or phlorescent lights?Sometimes electrical interference from other sources can cause hiss and/or hum.As others have suggested it could be bad patch cords or faulty wiring in your guitar.Did you use the same guitar and cord in your previous amp?TRy another amp and guitar in the same outlet and see if the problem persists and/or try your set up in another part of the house or someone elses house.
