Not only is the cherry blossom significant in Japan, the mayor of Tokyo (1912) gave several cherry (blossom) trees to Washington DC in an effort to build friendship/relationship between the two countries. In the '80s a flood destroyed tons of cherry trees in Japan & Washington gave trees back to Japan. Washington DC celebrates this gift (they received) each year with the Cherry Blossom Festival, which is actually going on right now in DC

Long winded way to say cherry blossoms represent japanese-american relations.
