I recently bought what was advertised as a 50th Anniversary Strat from one of the big chain stores. After looking through the parts and wiring diagrams on this site and looking at pictures of other 50th Anniversary Strats, I am starting to question if this is the real deal.

What I have is a black HSS with S1 switching. It has a 50th Strat Anniversary neck plate and it looks to have the same tuning machines as my 2006 MIM Strat. They are the sealed tuners with the Fender name on them. The serial number is Z3xxxxxx, although I don't think that's enough to tell if it is a 50th Anniversary.

The pictures I have seen of other 50th Anniversary models are usually of the Sunburst SSS variety.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Not to argue, but the support section says it can be a 2003 or 2004 model.

Easy way to tell ifs its a 50th. The neck bolt holes are not square across from each other because the 50ths had the heal cut more to reach the lower frets. If your neck play has all the 4 hole in the normal places, my friend you have a guitar that is built during the 50th anniversary of fender. but not a 50th anniversary edition.. A quicker way, Did it come with a 50th anniversary case? There were only a few different versions made.

Very curious, as far as I know, they were two version of the 50th anniversary: the "expensive" and the "cheaper" one.
The expensive was the sunburst finished with golden hardware, and the cheaper was something like an American Standard with three single coil 54 pickups and maple fingerboard, that´s mine guitar, with olimpic white finish.
But I didn´t knew that a model with HSS configuration was made.
You bought it second hand? May be the first customer put the humbucker on it.

AFAIK the only official 50th anniversary ones are what you are calling the expensive ones. There were actually 4, the three 2 color sunburst (American, American Deluxe, and Custom Shop) and the "Golden" which was a Deluxe model painted "Aztec Gold" which was introduced in mid-2004 and only produced to the end of that year. No other strat build then was designated as a 50th anniversary model, although it may have been made during the Stratocaster 50th anniversary year. So a white strat is not an official 50th anniversary strat, nor is any HSS strat unless the owner has modified one of the original 4 models.
