What are some good songs for someone to learn that hasn't had any lessons but plans on taking them?
I have 2 MM Strats and want to make more than noise with them.
I'm learning Walk the line from Johnny Cash and Smoke on the water from Deep Purple.
any other ideas would be most helpful and appriciated.

Learn some stuff by SRV, Buddy Guy or Eric Clapton.

That's a pretty place to start.

"Dark Eyed Cajun Woman" by The Doobie Brothers is a great Strat tune. Not too difficult either......five or six chords.

Thanks any suggestions are welcome.
I took this up as a way to get rid of stress at the end of the work day and I enjoy it.
I'm legally blind so a lot of what I learn is committed to memory.

Best bet for you.
Learn some scales, Start with the minor pentatonic blues scale, you will be able to find enough notes to jam along with about 80% of any blues /Rock songs.

Think Eric Clapton, BB King, SRV. Buddy Guy, ZZ top ect........

its fun and you will learn to improvise at the same time.

Then move on to the major pentatonic, a world of jamming is right there in those two scales.

+1000!

I taught myself basic scales and progressions by repeatedly listening to every song on Disraeli Gears by Cream and ultimately learning to replicate every lick and riff. I think I wore out four or five LPs in the process.

Need your love so bad by Peter Green is well worth a look.

Once you got your major and minor pentatonics down this tune is great for phrasing and mixing minor and major and getting a sweet impro going.

All good suggestions so far. You might as well go ahead and tackle some Hendrix, it's a Strat after all. :D Hey Joe is doable, so is Purple Haze or Manic Depression. Don't be intimidated or discouraged if it doesn't sound exactly right at first, the more you practice the better everything will come together. And that goes for everything, not just Hendrix or blues.

Thanks for all of the good advice.
I'm working on sweet home Alabama right now and I love it.

Little Wing and Angel are also 2 Hendrix songs that sound great on a Strat although the intros may be complicated for a beginner the basic chords of the songs aren't that hard. Hey Joe as someone mentioned is a perfect Strat song to learn.

Little Wing is a great song, but I think the Derek and the Dominos version is easier for beginners to learn....there are some singing solos in that one.
I play it both ways depending on the mood I'm in.
