Hello all!
I was just wondering what some good songs for a guitar duel are? Me and this kid a grade below me both play guitar, and both have strats but have never played together before. Well, yesterday we both had a little rehearsal to go over some chords with our music teacher for a song we're playing together at our school mass. During the entire practice (15 minutes lol) we were both playing differant things in the background.

We played for about 20 minutes afterwords together. I was playing a little bit of everything and so was he. Every now and then we'd start playing the same songs at the same time. We played Here Comes the Sun, Jessie's Girl, and Day Tripper to name a few.

Anyways, our teacher suggested that we do a duel for next years talent show. So, I was just wondering what songs/riffs are good for a guitar duel?

I was thinking these so far:

Walk This Way ~ Aerosmith
Beat It ~ Michael Jackson
I Love Rock 'N Roll ~ Joan Jett
Get Back ~ The Beatles

Again, sorry it's off topic! And thanks in advance :D

Johnny B Goode would be awesome I think. As would Layla, you could both swap between the lead and chordal part, and do a bit of a solo.

Just my .02

My vote?

"Time Was" by Wishbone Ash.

A tune that virtually guarantees any two guitarists an opportunity to get their rocks off!

As mentioned earlier, Layla (or for that matter anything off that album) or anything from the Allman Brothers, and almost any electric blues album.

FWIW.

For Arjay, boy you pulled a bit of an obscure one out of the old bag didn't you :?:
:D

Y'know really you can duel on any song.
You just gotta be even handed about it and give your partner plenty of time and patience if needed. Don't grab all the great solos for yourself and leave your partner just playing double stop riffs or whatever (though they are my faves).

Depending on your level of ability you may also want to look at some Thin Lizzy. They pretty much re-invented harmony guitar for the 70's. Eric Bell, Scot Gorham (America's unrecognized master), Brian Robertson all worked really hard to get to a point they could play well together. Gary Moore breezed in and back out the band at various times, doing much the same. Showing himself as the consumate pro.

Worth looking at for twin guitar goodness.

Easy, alternate guitars for the sax parts. Then during the solos, one guitar does the sax solo, the other the guitar solo. Nice little ditty in waltz time (3/4) to be a little different.

I wouldn't expect anyone to attempt this next one, without a good bit of experience under their belts. But there are things to be learnt from it. As you watch this, notice how neither guitar tries very hard to fill the sound out as a rhythm piece. Thats left up to the bass and drums. The guitars really just add emphasis to certain phrases. Both winding around and being very generous to each other. Though the solo is played on one guitar (the other stays on the riff). When you get the harmony guitars on the intro and particularly the ending they weave from the same pitch to up a 5th (it sounds like to me) and down a octave (at one point). Both players know exactly where they need to go at what point. You need to be able to count up to around 40 bars for that kind of shenanigans.
You can do some amazing things with twin guitars.

Now Moore showing why he was a absolute master. He breezed back into this band about a week before this was shot. It looks like he'd always been there. Just because it's HIM and he's playing Greenie's LP on this.

Notice how generous Gorham is. Moore, the new kid, is all over the mic' and the solo's. Whilst Gorham (a utterly fantastic guitarist. Every bit as good as Moore) is content to just lay back. He's got nothing to prove. Then for the ending they both unleash the fury.
Mastery.

(Yeah I'm having a Thin Lizzy day).

The call and response of Kirwin and Green is second to none on this track imho.

If it's a duel, then just yell out "What's that behind you!!!" and whack him over the head with your strat.

If what you are looking for is a "Duo" Then you have a ton of options.

For inexperienced players i would suggest finding something uncomplicated, that you can play together. Something where you can both double on the rhythm parts and then take turns on some leads, or where you can play some slightly divergent melodies.

Early on the CCR catalogue was a good source of material to play as a duo or small ensemble.
In grade 12 a friend and I played "The Pusher" by Steppenwolf in music class, while all the non-musicians were toiling over the 'Ole Grey Mare' or some other twaddle

Just practice it, get the parts tight, and have some fun.
