Hey guys,

Whilst looking through some video's on the tube last night, I came across this one where Richie Sambora is demoing some of his guitar collection.

He runs through a '59 335, a '59 Les Paul, a signature Strat, a 63 Strat and a '52 Tele.

Don't get me wrong here, the others sound great, but that '63 Strat.... Man does that guitar sound good!

I'm not trying to start a debate here on how good, or bad you may think Richie Sambora is (I think he is great, but as I said, that is beside the point and really not the reason for the post), I just thought some of you may be interested in hearing some of these iconic guitars compared next to each other.

Anyway, hope it's of interest to some of you

Russ :)

No probs Al, yea I think the video is taken from some kind of CD ROM or something. Notice the little curser moving around every now and again?

I think it's a Custom Shop 1963 Relic Strat which has been later modified with a hot humbucker in the bridge and a Floyd Rose locking trem, here's a pic of him showing the modded '63 relic in action:

Hi Chromeface,

I don't really think that is the same guitar as in the video.

The one in the vid has no Floyd and no humbucker in the bridge. The relicing looks different to me also.

I'm pretty sure the one in the video is actually an original 1963 Strat.

Russ

[edit] Sorry, I didn't read where you put that you believed it was modded later on. I still have my doubts though!

I suppose it's the same Strat used in the interactive CD.

I think Richie has probably modified the guitar with a humbucker and a Floyd Rose, though I'm not as 100% certain.

Another possibility: Richie asked the Custom Shop to make a heavily reliced replica the original 1963. He also told the CS to install the humbucker in the bridge and add a Floyd Rose tremolo.

The rest of the story remains a mystery.

The 63 Strat sounded good.
The 59 Les Paul sounded amazing.

Cheers,
Robin

It's not surprising that you were amazed by Sambora's '63 Strat,it was an "L series" that were made bewtwen '62 and '65.I've been singing the praises of the L series Strats (and other Fenders)being the best sounding ones they ever made-at least to my ears they are. I have 3 L series Fenders and they sound far better than their counterparts from other years-at least to my ears and a to lot of people who have heard and played them. BTW my Jimmie Vaughn Strat with its Tex Mex pups sounds closest to my '65 Strat of my other 3 Strats but surprisingly enough my '00 MIM can get pretty close.

The signature guitar Richie plays on the CD-Rom is the old cherry sunburst model with the graduated MOP star inlays, the original Floyd Rose tremolo, the 25dB mid-boost and the DiMarzio PAF Pro/Texas Special HSS pickups.

It's the same guitar Todd Krause built for him in 1993.

Most people pick my "L series" Strat as my best sounding one too.
