I installed the Greasebucket on the neck and bridge tone controls (no tone control on middle pickup) of my Fender SCN equipped MIM Standard Strat. It works as advertised - roll off the highs without getting bloated sounding bass. I like to roll it down to about 6 or 7 with the neck/middle pickup for nice jazzy sound.

This particular pic is a reminder of this place I lived in for a bit, total squalor, of course when you're 19, dawn patrol's were the only priority. ( No Mom and Dad were not thrilled, He'll grow out of it..He did..The part about living in a dump..That is..)
Oh Yeah...that look's like that dayglow pink wetsuit with dayglow lime green sleeve's...

Not a fan of the TBX at all. It doesn't operate the way it's advertized. 6-10 you go into the 1 meg side of the pot. Giving that gutless sound, though granted partially increasing the treble. Not worth the cost of the loss of character to the bass and mid frequencies.
0-4 it's a regular tone pot.
On 5 it's a strangled kind of sound.
Not really a fan of the delta tone either. Sounds harsh on 10, more so than a pickup wired straight to the volume control then to the jacksocket.

Never tried the Greasebucket.

What I am a fan of (sorry for all the previous negatives, but I'm ending on a positive) is the Bill Lawrence QFilter. Get one of them in a Telecaster and have superb control of the treble. I'm a big fan.

I have a tone pot in my Andy Summers inspired Tele that acts like a mid-range "scoop." From 1-3 and overdrive it gives me a Clapton Strat like tone. From 4-10 its a regular tone knob.

If I turn the volume down and put use the scoop part of the pot it makes it ultra clean, almost like an acoustic guitar or piezo pickup sound. I also have an after burner 20db volume boost pot. In conjunction with the HB, bridge pickup and wiring for 5 different pickup configurations I have one versatile guitar.

quote]My Am Standard has CS Texas Specials and a Callaham block added. My AVRI'57 is all original, but I plan to have the neck redone on it and put some Fat 50's or TS in it also. I'm still undecided about what type neck so it's all on hold for now. Waiting to find the one that grabs me then try and have mine made to the same specs.

I think most USA strats are fine when they are original. But we guitarists are very picky. At least I am. I may be too critical of my sound and my playing also. So some of us are always searching for that perfect tone and perfect strat. So we have to start modding. We notice alot more than our audience ever does in terms of tone and sound and what not.

I don't know alot about amps or mods that can be done to amps. I know I played a Twin Reverb at GC not long ago that had an amazing sound. And a Deluxe Reverb Reissue also. I can't see why either of those amps would need modding unless someone wanted more distortion.

Well said. I was intimidated by my amps until I got to the point where I understood that I didn't need a new amp, I just needed a refinement. I tried different speakers, tube changes, learned how to set bias, change the "tone stack", and simple basic stuff that let me make subtle changes, fix things that break and understand my equipment. Just as long as you know how to work safely, discharge caps and simple basic stuff that will keep you from killing yourself. There are some great books and DVD's out there.

You are the first guy I've heard of using the Q Filter other than me! I am 57, and have been using them in my Stratocasters since around '74 or '75. They stopped making them at some point, and I bought a bunch of them. I have two left...did they start making them again?

Well, I'll chime in as having nothing but stock strats.

I have done plenty of mods on other guitars including one with 2 hums and 2 double pole 6 way rotary switches and a 3 way toggle. I could get just about any combination of coils that you could think of....and some that you'd wonder why anyone would want.

YUP! Pure Stock Strat.....and I won't ever change it. I want to keep the sound it was "born" with.

Same here...

You could take my 1995 Fender Strat and hang it right back up on a rack in a music store. It's the same guitar as it was back in '95, except it's now 16 years old and has a little wear and tear from use, but nothing major.

The thing that makes my '95 Strat very special and very unique (according to a very well known local guitar tech). My '95 Strat is in fact a MIM Strat with a sunburst finish and maple neck, but yet, somehow, someway, in Ensenada, Mexico they "goofed" when assembling it from the parts they get from Corona, CA or the parts they stock in Mexico. The pickups/electronics are actually Fender Delta-Tone (which is from the American Standard series, made in USA), but yet the body, neck, bridge, hardware, etc... is all from Ensenada, Mexico! 8)

Isn't that the Antigua model... :?: 8)
I had not seen actual pics of one or one at a shop, only the catalog version.
It's beautiful, the catalog pic's do not do it justice unfortunately.

As far as modding a stock strat, it really is about living with the strat for a while, before changing things around, I have modded my MIM Players Deluxe, but those pups went into one of my builds with TBX and 220K Cap and I could not be more pleased with the result. The rebuild is basically a standard set up.
The 56 NOS had 2 bad tuners, thus replacements were needed.

I have a Fender MIM strat, which I bought in January, and the more I play it the more I like the sound it has. So for the forseeable future it is going to remain stock.

I also have another strat, albeit a Squier, which I Have recently finished modifying. I completely replaced the wiring inside with vintage-style cloth wire, replaced the pots and 5-way switch, changed the stock single coil in the bridge for a Wilkinson humbucker. The fun part is that I added a blower switch mod, also known as a passing lane mod. This is basically a switch which allows me to take signal straight from the bridge humbucker to the jack socket with the switch in one position, or just regular strat controls on the other.

This allows me to go from a nice chimey rhythm sound to quite a hot lead sound with the flick of a switch 8)

I bought my Strat nearly 2 years ago and it sounded great with the stock pickups. I had also purchased a David Gilmour EMG loaded pickguard to install on said guitar, but sent it back to trade for a Fulltone wah and octavia. It already sounded just like a strat should sound, so I figured the pedals would be more fun/useful. I believe I was right. I've also got an Epiphone Firebird VII. It was given to me, so guess what happened to it? Yup, new pickups, pots, switch, jack, bridge and locking tuners. It had been sitting in the bottom of a closet under the laundry, so it needed all the help it could get. It's a fun guitar that has a great sound after all the money I threw at it.
