Does anyone know how to wire the tone control that works on the middle pickup to also work on the bridge pickup on a Deluxe Player Strat. This is the Strat with the push button to activate the bridge pickup in combination with the Neck or all 3 pickups at once. Seems when I try to jump the 2 lugs on the 5 way like you would on an American Standard it doesn't work on this model. I think it's wired differently because of the button.
thanks
Patrick

Hi pdestoop,

Yeah, the DP Strat is wired a little differently. If you look at the drawing (link below) you can see that the tone pots are wired directly to the pup wires on that same side of the selector switch. So the other side of the switch, (the terminals that would normally be used for the tone pots), is used for the push button to add the bridge pup in pos 4 and 5, and two terminals are empty. You could simply move the wire from the middle pickup tone pot where it connects at the switch, to the bridge pickup wire at the switch, but then the middle pup will not have tone control. To keep the push button operation, and also have the tone controls the way that you want, you will need to change the selector switch to a Super Switch, or some other type of mod. My personal preference is to have 2 tone controls, one on the bridge and one on the neck, with none on the middle.

Edit:
On the drawing, it looks like the 2 wires that go to the push button switch, connect to the same terminal, but they are actually connected to 2 different terminals (shown at the bottom of drawing).

Howdy and Welcome!

It is possible to have the tone control on the middle and bridge pickup with out the use of a Super Switch. Its a pretty simple mod. Just need to swap a few thing round.

I'll post a diagram when I get back later this evening.

Andy

Edit: Made the post make sense...

I see it now Andybighair, brilliantly simple! You're a genius, even Fender didn't see it!

Is this what you have in mind? If you wire the selector switch to standard operation, then simply connect the push button to the bridge pup wire, it will work. I dismissed wiring it that way, but it does not matter, because that is all the push button does anyway -adds the bridge pup-. Wired that way, in any position on the selector switch, the push button will throw the bridge pup into the mix, and you will still have tone pots wired for control of all 3 pups. Why didn't Fender do it that way? I wouldn't think that noise would be an issue. Or were you thinking of something else?

Thanks for your reply. I will give that a try! Sounds like it will work. One question. With the button out and the switch selected to the bridge will the bridge pickup still work or will it only be on if the button is pushed in? If thats the case I'm ok with that because I'd still rather have a tone control for each pickup.

thanks everyone!

Yes, the bridge pickup will work with the button out. You'll have normal operation with the button out, and with the button in, the bridge pup is added to any selector switch position. :)

Good Stuff! :D

Keep us posted on how you get on. Maybe a few pic's of your Strat too!

Cheers!

I wired up my Strat and it works great but there seems to be no tone control on the bridge pickup when its combined with the neck pickup. Is there anyway to get a tone control wired in when using this pickup combo?

thanks for your help guys
Patrick

The bridge/neck pickup selection should have the upper tone control only (neck tone pot). In this position, the other tone control (bridge tone pot) is switched out of the circuit. So, if the upper tone control doesn't work in that position, check your wiring.
