I'd go for the Clapton too.

Hell of a lot of guitar for that price.

I took option #3-used AV 57. IMHO it's the best out of all you mentioned, but that's because I don't like signature guitars or roadworns. I like to think of my instrument as signature to me, not somebody else, and I'd rather not have it look like my civic.

Anyways, AV is the best for what you want (vintage hardware, etc...), if that's not an option then the Am Standard will do everything you want as well. So many strats...so little time...and money ^^

I have to say, I do love my AVRI 57.

How about an option for you to save up a bit more an get a new AVRI?

I'd go with a new American Standard, or you can probably find an American Deluxe used for $1000

No need in getting Tex-Mex pups yanked out.My $900 Jimmie Vaughn has Tex-Mex and they are about the best sounding pickups I've heard outside of my original '65 Strat. Of course pickup choice is purely subjective but I love the tone of Tex-Mex especially for blues and Heendrix stuff.BTW the Jimmie Vaughn could very well be worth your while checking out,I find the gentle V of the neck very comfortable.

If you're interested strictly looking a strat to play (and which likely will never appreciate in value) I'd suggest building your own. The options are near limitless and for $1000, you should have no problem finding parts exactly to spec (or very close) to what you're looking for as far as neck shape, hardware, pickups, finish, etc.

It's something to think about...

I've got 3 that I built and they are better than anything off the shelf.

So after all these replies I dont know if my discision got harder or easier, haha. Oh well, looks like I have a buisy weekend ahead of me though.

On a side note to what JamGuy said, how would I go about getting a totally custom guitar? I know I can get all my p'ups, electronics, and hardware from my local guitar shop but what about getting a true American Fender body and neck? Does Fender sell individual bodies and necks? And would it get a SN# or just be a "kit guitar"?

Thanks everyone!!!

So playing around online with pricing I built this for around $1K...

Musikraft 60's Alder Body
Musikraft 50's Soft V Maple Neck (Maple Frets)
Orion Black Nitro Lacquer Paint and Finish
Fender 62 Reissue Vintage Trem and Tuners
Fender Fat 50's Pups
Fender Black 3-ply Pickguard with White Knobs

Or I could just spend an extra $400 and get a Fender AV '57 or '62 which would be pretty much the same thing....

American Deluxe .. Can't go wrong
There's other Models that are just about 1K (Highway one, American Special, American Standard, & American Vintage. See which one you like best and which one your pocket is most comfortable with. The worse guitar is an expensive one that you won't enjoy.
