The best Les Paul I own slaughters all my Fenders in terms of... everything, but I still leave it in the case. It is too expensive to play freely. I feel more comfortable playing a Fender.

I know that if my Fenders fall over the headstock won't snap off.

Very subjective, How could a Les Paul ever slaughter a strat at what a strat is best at?? Clean translation of exactly what your fingers are doing with that crisp hot fender tone. I am glad you like your LP. I love mine too. Obviously not as much as you but that's ok. I used to swear by them when i was a kid. Tastes change. A fender can do a pretty good LP impersonation a LP cant do a Strat. Interesting reading on a fender chat site i must say. I would imagine the lack of reply is obviously a mixture of familiarity with you and proof the bold and totally subjective statement of "slaughtering it at everything" is pretty impertinent around here. Thanks for the laugh though.......

Well, maybe Fender could bring back the Katana
http://www.theguitarcollection.org.uk/gallery1/katana-p.html
And Gibson could bring back the Victory

Or not...

Guitar Squirrel.

Can't use a strat for metal??? Seriously mate, have a think about that.

Humbuckers are for girls when it comes to metal. Just ask Fast Eddie Clark.
Don't focus on distortion, focus on the strength of the pickup and choose punch. You'll dominate any humbucker sound with ease.

Gibson are ok. I just wish they'd sort the neck binding to fret ends out.

+1

There are so plenty of Heavy Metal guitarists using Strats. Think about Jimmy Page. If I'm not mistaken Led Zeppelin 1 was recorded with a Telecaster.

As for Gibson's binding and fret ends: I own a Les Paul and it's pretty sweet, but the fact that Gibson polishes their guitars up and then sends out the door without enough time for the finish to cure is a shame. Gibsons are overpriced and not enough bang for the buck.

Price to use ratio:
'06 HWY1 $500/Used in Christian rock band for 6 months.
'62 Strat $1K/Used for 2 years in classic rock band.
'00 Clapton Strat $1K/Used for 8 years in various bands.
'04 50th Anniversary Strat $1/ Used for 2 years in classic rock band.

'03 Les Paul Std. $2,500/ Used by my leader guitarist in a jam band for 3 months. Has spent most of the time the case. Goes out of tune way too quickly.
’05 ES335 $2K/ Has never been used in a band and rarely gets used.

It didn’t matter what music I was playing, the Fender guitars were able to fill any role, so I don’t see how a Les Paul will ever (and I mean ever) slaughter a Strat.

I’m curious as to how long the auther has been playing and what kind of music they play. This maybe the reason for their mind set.

Les Paul to Strat comparrison:

Les Paul Std.

Pros:
Grear Tone and sustain
Beautiful woods and finishes (This is one area that Fender can not touch).
Very easy to play fret neck

Cons:
Way too expensive.
Limit toneal color.
Finish cracks at seams too quickly
Heavy (but important to sound)
Bad tuning keys
Bad choice of material for nut (Never stays in tune)
Will scratch if you breath on it.

Scores (1-5): Quality 4, Sound 5, Versatility 3, Features 3, Value 4, Fit & Finish 4
Over all Score: 3.8

Current American Strat

Pros:
Beautiful finishes
Very Easy to play neck
Wide range of tonal colors for a wide range of styles (to include Heavy Metal).
Not out of the price range for most player.
A built in vibroto
A industrial built guitar that takes a lot of punishment
Easy to repair and modify.
Comfortable body shape.

Cons:
Some times poor set up from the factory
Some times frets are not dressed properly
Pick ups aren't as in your face powerful as HBs.
Does not sustain as long as a Les Paul, but does have good sustain.

I've tried to be very fair in my assesment.

Please give me your list of pros, cons and over all score.

Scores (1-5): Quality 4, Sound 5, Versetility 5, Features 4, Value 5, Fit & Finish 4
Over all Score: 4.5

To me a big part of the price for the Gibbies are the finish.Nitro guitars are alot more expensive to make and take alot more work.Even the Studios have nitro.Of course another factor is the name. The LP does what it does better than any other guitar, but the other guitar player in my band plays a LP thru a Vox and my strat and drri is way more versatile.
Just out of curiosity, what amps are you guys playing with your gibbies?I just bought an Epi and I dont care for the drri with it.I like the el84s better. Just curious.

Nitrocellulose does take longer to cure, but it is NOT a lot more work.

Where a Gibson tends to take more work to finish is in the usual selections of wood used.

Alder, which is fender's most common material is very close pored so doesn't require the 'grainfilling' step to create a smooth surface.

Ash has prominent grain, so requires some filling, this adds a couple steps, because you need to not only fill the grain, but then sand smooth. Ash is fender's other go to wood.

Aside from the decorative tops (despite the mythology the main reason for the maple tops on LP"s is that it's pretty,) Gibson uses Mahogany or related species for most of it's electric guitar bodies. This is an open pored wood, it requires extensive grainfilling. This is where all the added work comes from.

This is a generalization, as the companies both have exceptions to their norms.
From this point on though there is a longer timeline for a nitrocellulose finish, but it doesn't take any more work to let a body sit untouched for a day than it does to ignore it for a couple weeks or a month.

Fender tends to use more monotone finishes, so they take less time to spray, but the extra work in spraying a sunburst applies whether you use Nitro, urethane, or polyester.

Gibson charges more mainly because people expect to pay more.

I think Fender & Gibson both make nice guitars. I personally prefer Fender Strats over anything because I like the comfort of the body (the countours & the light weight are great for both sitting & standing to play), I like the C-shaped necks, I like the fact that the necks aren't painted, the location & comfort of the bridge.

I think really it's all preference. In fairness I acknowledge that Gibson makes fine guitars as well. They just aren't comfortable to me. There is one that someday I might like to buy & that's the ES 339. I love the way the 335 sounds & the 339 is comfortable to me due to it's smaller body.

But overall, I love my Strat & Strat copies. When I want humbucker tone I'll go for the Standard HSS.

I think both companies should stick to their original recipe. "Moving forward" can be good if it's done with respect to the original blueprint of something that's already great.
Subtle improvements over the years have been made to help tuning stability & intonation & for me that's more than enough.

When something is good, & it has a history to back up the fact that people think it's good, such as Fenders & Gibsons, don't change it. Each company has their place for different players. Some players enjoy both, some favor one over the other. It's all preference of the player.

Just me.

Hell No ! #TeamFender . Gibson lost its swag before I was born (early 90s). They're over expensive for NO REASON. The only good stuff is the reissues and the custom signature models that no one can afford.

Budglo,I play my Epi Les Pauls through my Blues Jr. and they sound great through it,as a matter of fact my Traditional Pro sounds just like a PAF Les Paul. The blues Jr. is great with a L.P. for jazz and classic rock but for pure raunch from a Les Paul there's nothing like a Master Volume Marshall such as the 2203,2204,2205 or 4210.

I mentioned I love my Gibbies earlier. Some have come and gone and others simply stayed!

But when I want Strat/Gibson tone, there is the best of both worlds in a Stratogibson! (OK, OK I have posted them before on threads like this!  )
