Hey I purchased an American Standard (Candy Cola with Rosewood fretboard) last year, and I am loving it. The only strat I had played previous to that was my old Mexican one, which wasn't my favorite guitar by any stance. Anyhow, I'm looking to get another stratocaster, but I don't want them to have identical sounds. I was thinking of maybe changing the pickups in my current strat to something a little hotter (to use for more distorted songs), and then maybe buying a strat with a maple fretboard and maybe an ash body for more clean tones. What do you all think?

That sounds good. You can't have too many guitars.. or can you?

Maybe an HSS for some built-in tonal variety? I sure like mine!

The MIM ceramic pups may be hotter sounding than you think...

Perhaps have a look at 57 Vintage HR and leave the AmStd as it is. That will give you some diffs and variety.

If your AmStd is anything like one i had, I would maybe replace a bridge pickup only, since I was never able to get satisfactory tones out of it in the bridge only. This alnico 5 are plenty hot for the modern strat sounds. Play with the pickup heights and level the amp eq to dial them right.

How about a tele? Say a 72 reissue deluxe, would give you a humbucker for a different tone set and don't worry about the MIM stamp, they are great guitars for not alot of money :!:

Enjoy

I was trying to remember buying my 2nd Stratocaster and I realized that I jumped from 1 to 3 ...

... that is, I bought my 2nd and 3rd Strats on the same day! Both used, from different guys with ads in the local newspaper. I remember that I had checked them out separately, made the deals, then the next weekend I borrowed my mom's car to go get them. Then, of course, I snuck them into the house ...

I still have the guitars --- turned out to be pretty sweet deals.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone. I know a guy who's selling a nice looking 3tone sunburst american standard for a really good deal, so i think I'm gonna hit him up on that, and then just change the bridge pickup on my current strat. I was looking on Seymour Duncan and I pretty much narrowed it down to the JB Jr, Little '59, and the custom staggered SSL-5. I want it to blend well with the other pickups in my strat, but I still wanna get some good hard rock tones out of it? Have any of you guys tried these pickups?

Sounds like a great idea.
No such thing as too many Strats.
