Once upon a time most of the electric guitars in the music store had flat wound strings on them. Since trying the round wounds on both 6 string and bass guitars, I haven't went back.

But recently I was trying to get the sound of a lick from the sixties hit, "My Girl," with my Strat with little success. I was wondering if maybe I needed flats for this, or perhaps someone could tell me what flat wound strings on a Strat were noted for.

Or maybe there is a web site with string/guitar combinations of favorite guitar songs.

I use Flatwounds, but I have no idea what songs had guitars with flatwounds in them.

Just put my first set of flatwound bass strings on my Precision Bass this weekend for a Motown/James Jamerson sound. Very smooth feeling, less fret clicking, but definately not as bright sounding as the roundwounds. Don't know if I'm going to leave the flats on or return to rounds. Maybe I'll just have to buy another bass.. one for each type of string. ;-)

Hoya!

Can you tell me?
I have heard that flatwounds had more tension than roundwounds. Thus, it was not wise to put them on other than a big Jazz-box.

Is it a legend or the truth?

I currently play Dean Markleys 10-46 and would like to try flats (but they have to be bigger, haven't they?).

Be funky

I use Flatwounds on all my guitars, and have had no problems. As long as the guitar is set up correctly they should be fine.

I make my own 9-42, 9-46, or 9-48 sets. I use Dean Markley Flatwounds and Dean Markly Blue Steel sets to make mine.

Cheers for you quick answer! :-)

So I may try some next time. Which kind of sound can I expect? I know the sound they give on bass, but on guitar? Mellower and rounder than flats?

Less treble, more bassy, smoother, fuller.

I use 11-52 to play tunes from the '60s.
Nice strings but loosing their sound quality faster.

I'm using flatwounds on my 65 Guild CE100D, bascially an ES-175. It gives me a great, old school tone for blues and swing. All my other guitars are round wound.

I use D'Addario Semi-Flats on my bass and love them. I wonder if anyone makes them for guitars.

I can't remember who it is right off the top of my head, but someone does make some 1/2 rounds for guitar.
