For $200 bucks, Squier series is your budget.
Or you can get a Mexican Standard Stratocaster used on ebay for that, what I highly recommend you, taking place the crafmanship quality is much greater.

The Fender Vibro Champ XD or Super Champ XD are great amps, and can be had in that price range as well

+1 to that. The Vibro Champ XD is a great pratice hybrid amp indeed with lots of voices. Take into consideration as well the Fender Champion 600 for a all-tube pratice amp.

Personally for a Beginner I 'd lean more towards the Vibro Champ as it will have pretty much everything he needs to experiment with and gets pretty good tube break up. the Champ is a pretty plain amp IMO, and I know as a beginner you like different sounds to tinker with. Here is a vid of me playing mine to give you a taste of what its capable of :)

For a beginner amp, try a Mustang 1 for $99. They have several presets that allow a beginner to simply turn a knob to dial in several different tones!

When we first start all we want is for a glowing tube inside of our amp.
When I started I took a Fender FM25 DSP, but in no time, about 2 months later I was dropping it for a Fender Pro Junior.
If was today and my budget was that guy, I would buy a MIM Strat and a VibroChamp XD. BUT if the MIM I got has a 3Tone Sunburst color, I would go for the Champion 600 just for the looks! 3TS and Champ600 are really beautiful as a couple.

You would be best off buying a used guitar and a used amp. There is a good chance you will not continue with the guitar -- it happens.

Also, don't worry about an amp with lots of bells and whistles in terms of tones you can create. As a beginner, you really should focus on playing with clean tone. You'll be able to clearly hear when you're hitting the right notes.

A couple of other items to invest in: a tuner, a metronome, and a book on music theory.

If I had to do it all over again, I'd apply more structure to my learning and not treat the guitar any differently than the piano or other instruments.

You'd be much better off buying good used in both amps and guitars,I have mixed emotions about dealing with ebay unless it's a dealer with a proven good track record for selling -not buying.Mexican made Fenders are of really good quality and can be found in the price range you're looking at.A good used amp in this price range could prove a better buy than a new one and you could also look into used Vox and Marshall amps as they make very good hybrid amps with great amp models and effects.
As others have stated it's much better to start off playing clean and undistorted without any effects so you can hear the true tone of what you're playing, lots of luck with your hunt and stop by the forum for any advice you need, there's always an answer here.

I was just looking at a catalog of a guitar store and i saw they have a guitar set complete with an amp....it's called the 'Fender Electric Guitar Pack Squier SE-100'.....is it a good buy or would i be better of buying the guitar and amp separately???
and also how is the 'Fender Squier Affinity Strat'....i m really stuck between these two choices...so some help would be great.

The short answer is get the best you can afford and you'll never regret it later. My personal suggestions would be the highest end Squier you could get or a used lower end Fender along with a Roland Micro Cube amp. My first amp was a Squier amp like the one in the package deal you posted and honestly the amp is as important to your sound as the guitar you're playing. The Squier didn't sound very good but the Micro Cube sounded incredible for what it was. An amp can make or break a guitar. A good guitar through a cheapo amp will sound cheapo, a cheapo guitar through a nice amp will sound decent.

I work in a guitar store which deals Fender and Squier and I advise everyone that if they can afford an Affinity over a Bullet, get the Affinity. Bullets (like the guitar in the package) are decent guitars, but the Affinity has better quality hardware (especially as far as the tuning machines go) and usually more attention to detail than the Bullets and overall they're a better guitar. An Affinity will last you longer too, and you'll probably be more inclined to keep playing it when the itch for more guitars takes hold and you get something even better. I've changed out the pickups in mine and it's lasted me seven years so far.

If you're looking at packs, the best you can do as far as a Squier Strat goes is one of these. http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Affinity-Strat-HSS-and-GDEC-Junior-Amp-Value-Pack?sku=512577 It has an Affinity Strat with an amp that I would say is on about equal ground as the Roland Micro Cube and out of all the packs it's the one I'd most highly recommend. If money is an issue, the next best thing you can do is get the middle of the road pack, http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Affinity-Special-Strat-and-Frontman-15G-Amp-Value-Pack?sku=513288. But that one doesn't have nearly as nice of an amp.

But really, I wouldn't go for the pack you posted unless you have to. It's better than a First Act, or anything in the Walmart/Target/Toys 'R Us range and if it's the best you can do it's not bad. But you won't regret spending a little extra for something better in the long run.
