Fender has had their guitars lisenced in a few countries:
USA
India '89 - '90
Korea early '80s - '85
Mexico '91 - present
Japan '80s - ??? (I'm not sure if they discontued building in Japan).

I also recall them having some built in Indinisia

The serial number indicates that the guitar is an '88 or '89 US made Strat.
Some pictures of the following would be helpful:
the neck plate
the front of head stock
the bridge end of the neck

I hope this helps.

Japan still makes Fender guitars :)

Interesting; thanks for posting the photos. However, it's a fake - a mish-mash of features of guitars from the 70s and 80s, and from guitars made in the USA and Japan. As others have said - Fenders have been made several different places but never in Canada.

Though Fender do have some of their acoustic instruments made in Canada.

That Strat is a fake though. Despite the obvious headstock issues, the 22nd fret end of the neck is all wrong. Far too square. I cant say one way or the other about the body.

One way to not get ripped off is to do your homework before buying. The other way is to post here for some well informed opinions first. I've seen many a buyer that have wished they had posted here before hand.

You can study up on Fender guitars by using source books, buying guitars from stores that stock Fender guitars, The Fender website and many other scourses.
The following is a link to a very good source website:
http://home.provide.net/~cfh/fender.html

I hope this helps.

Indeed!

I'm glad it wasn't me being the first calling "fake."
Check out the bullet truss rod adjustment too ...
Wow, that's a bad one ...

You might have a genuine Fender "F style" neck plate.

Good Lord, the dot spacing at the 12th fret isn't even symmetrical!

Woof woof!

I'm sorry to hear that you got a fake, but the questions that come to my mind are:

1. Was it a great guitar before you found out that it was a fake?
2. Did you buy the guitar because it was a Fender or did you buy the guitar because it's a good instrument?

Since we all agree that it's a fake than here is your chance to strip the guitar down and do whatever you want to it. You’re not going to hurt the value.

I own two Parts-o-casters (Fender like guitars that I built from parts). One is an Andy Summers Tele and the other is a '62 Strat. For people who aren't Fender experts they would hard pressed to tell that they were not actual Fender instruments. They have many Fender parts on them, but the neck and bodies are after market. They look, feel and sound like Fenders, but they are not.

Here's the really interesting part; of all of my Strats (I own five) people love the fake '62 the most. Better than the EC Strat or my 50th Anniversary American Series Strat.

The bottom line is that you need to be happy with this instrument. Yes, you got scammed. It’s going to bother you every time you look at the head stock. I’m not telling what you should do. I’m just giving you an option. Here's a chance to make this guitar your own. Eddie Van Halen's famous guitar is home build. Brian May's favorite guitar is home built. Slash had a beloved Les Paul while he was recording with G-n-R that was not a Gibson. It was just a very good copy.

You've got lemons; make lemon aid.
