I love the look of the worn out guitars, and i got an 09 mim strat. So what I was wondering is does the poly finish wear out? is there a way to make it wearout quicker or thinner.

I'm not baggin on you here. Really, to each his own... The irony is just killin me. I love my nitro finished guitars because they don't look like they were diiped in molten plastic. But I hate that the finish wears off so quick...

Poly doesn't wear much at all unless you're really rough with it and for a long time,in my experience...oh yeah it will show some signs of aging over the years, but to get it worn out looking like you're wanting, you might need to get some opinions on how to age it with sandpaper or something....it won't be real easy I don't think.

The answer is " NO " unless you like that faux finish..
The only thing I can say is that " Time Will Tell ".
Play it a lot, over time, a few years perhaps a couple of decades, it will begin to look it's age.

The irony is there is this great rush to have the " LOOK " the vintage look yet no one seems to be willing to actually match their relic guitars and look like something that's been on the road for 40 years and the Cat just dragged in from the gutter.  ( Keith R. notwithstanding 8) )

Let's face it, what does a 20 to 30 year old playing a vintage relic look guitar say to you ?
To me it looks amusing, simply because there is no way anyone was around gigging 30+ years ago if today they are in their 20 to 30's.

This is not meant to denigrate, but when everyone is playing relics, then the real thing just becomes that much less of a rarity, even though all the others( guitars) are just pretending.

There is something to be said about a pristine looking strat that doesn't look like the Flintstones used it for chopping.

To each their own preference of course, but my advice on this is unless your guitar came reliced, then don't do it yourself because if you are not intending to keep it for a very long time and you wish to sell it in the near future, the first question is going to be to lower the price to rock bottom because it is all beat up.
I know it doesn't make sense either way but :?: :?:
The marketplace is a fickle world.

In most ways agree. A great 90s strat should look great in a couple of decades. In fact, it should have some darker coloration going on at this time. The finish and the color of the wood/finish will darken with more time (no need to speed up the process).

the poly finish was made to reduce that aged look the old nitro finish strats got... id let time do the work... its well worth is when in 10 years time you know each dent and scratch has a meaning...

And some people like me have turned down buying Strats in the '60s/early '70s because the finish was mostly gone.
I wish I had bought every one of them now.

Forget it. It won't happen. Modern poly finished guitars have a finish that is all but bomb proof, unless you treat it like a bastard. Even then, it will just look abused, not aged. Some subtle darkening of the neck and oxidisation of the hardware is all you can really realistically expect.

A nitro type finish is what you need. My Highway 1 Strat finish is wearing faster than I would have believed and I couldn't be happier about it.

A white, poly coated guitar will indeed shift color to a more yellow over time ! As for will a poly finish ever look "road worn".....NO. Poly does not "check" like nitro, poly will just bust and crack.....big, deep cracks. It will not wear through to the wood from normal use like an old nitro guitar would.....and poly was designed to NOT react with other chemicals and to be thicker and more durable, and it is truly nearly impervious to everything. If you drop the guitar, poly can bust off in large flakes, sometimes with wood attached. Do not try to fake a worn look on your poly.....you will flat-out ruin whatever value your guitar had.......trust me!

It might be also important to appreciate instruments that are in nice shape. I have a poly-finished strat. In 20 years I'll be proud of how well I've taken care of it.

Polyester finishes are tough as nails!
I stripped an old Kramer Focus to make a EVH replica and I had to use 40 grit sandpaper to remove it. They do chip but to make it look worn without it looking damaged is very hard.

Ive got a Poly finish on my Am. Spec. 3 color sunburst, W/ the black Pickguard. It is Beautiful. One of the best looking guitars I've owned. and I bought the SKB Case to keep it that way. I'm Glad it has a durable coat.

It will chip, it will crack, but it will not wear away smoothly.

If you want a body that will have paint that wears smoothly get yourself a HWY1 body and buff it up with some rubbing compound. That will shine it up nicely and then let time and playing do the rest.
