You should probably learn how to do a 12 bar blues progression in a couple of keys, with a couple of different chord voicings.

When I was teaching, I would stay with three or four chord songs for beginners and students, some, but not all are :

Knockin On Heaven's Door - Dylan/Clapton/GnR
Evil Ways - Santana
You Really Got Me - The Kinks
It's All Over Now - Stones
Wild Thing - The Troggs/Hendrix/Prince
Is This Love - Bob Marley
Shout At The Devil - Motley Crue
Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple
Big Me - Foo Fighters
Old Love - Eric Clapton
Wonderful Tonight - Clapton
Drops of Jupiter - Train
Blister in the Sun - Violent Femmes
The Middle - Jimmy Eat World
Stacy's Mom - Fountains of Wayne
Picture - Kid Rock & Sheryl Crow
Dancing in the Dark - Springsteen
Livin On A Prayer - Bon Jovi
La Bamba - Los Lobos
Down By The River - Neil Young
Horse With No Name - America
Sweet Home Alabama - L.S.
All Summer Long - Kid Rock
Werewolves of London - Warren Zevon
Rhianna - Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks

And the other hundreds of songs that follow a C-F-G (progression)
or a C-Am-F-G type progression...there are tons of 'em.

That should get you started, then you'll know about a thousand blues tunes too!

Good luck!

I'v been playing for about 6 months. It comes naturally to me. The first song I learned was Detroit Rock City and thats somewhat easy. It does really depend on what you like though.
Also, I suggest you play rhythm first before jumping to lead.

This is a good list that fenderflamestrat put together. House of The Rising Sun is good for beginner's chord changing.

Thanks lol It's probably because I'm so new haha

Seven Nation Army - White Stripes. This riff will be played by guitarists for decades.
Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple. This riff was played by guitarists for decades.

On a Basic Traditional 12 bar blues is a good place for both of you to start. Say you want to play in the key of G. Well a traditional 12 bar blues is the 1st chord, the 4th chord, and the 5th chord . So start counting at G. 1st is G- 2nd is A-3rd is B- 4th is C- 5th is D- 6th is E- and 7th is F, and back to G. You only want to play the 1st, the 4th, and the 5th. G- C- and D. The pattern goes like this 1st chord G=four bars, 4th chord C=two bars, 1st chord G=two bars, 5th chord D=one bar, fourth chord C=one bar, first chord G=one bar, and on the last bar split it starting with the fifth chord D a half bar and the first chord G a half bar. and there you have a traditional 12 bar blues. If it looks a little confusing the way I wrote it Sorry, I tried to make it as simple as possible. Watch a few You Tube videos, I'm sure there is a lesson or two on there that refer to this pattern. It is Very common. Good luck. 8)

Once you learn how to arch your hand to play a clean barre chord, you find them very easy to play.

Many songs by Creedence Clearwater Revival will do the trick. Great melodies and well written and for the most part simple chord structure. Look at Bad Moon Rising and Who'll Stop the Rain to start.

Down on the bayou is very simple and dabbles in the E7th chord.
Proud Mary is super easy also.

If you can read tabs "Europa" is not too hard. Perhaps when start moving to more complex songs you can try it. You'd be suprised how easy that song is.

Hi fendersguitargurl,

How about your own private computer lessons?

http://www.fender.com/community/onlinelessons/

It seems that nearly everyone that I know that plays guitar, started with Deep Purple "Smoke on the Water", it's just what everyone wanted to play, it's easy. The very first song that I learned was "Michael Row the Boat Ashore" on acoustic guitar, 3 chords (long time ago).
