Jay, I can honestly tell you that I've completely changed my mind about tonewoods. I believe they offer nothing to a guitar, other than providing stability.

The notion of the wood acting on the string is preposterous. That would cause all sorts of distortions of the signal that we just don't get.

Anyway thats all I'm contributing to this thread. I'll tell you privately why I think like I do.

I completely agree this forum looks like every other troglodyte internet gathering. Exactly why I can't be bothered anymore and outright refuse to post about stuff I get up to.

I believe you, Ninja. I've sent you a private message on that other troglodyte internet gathering.

Ok I badly worded the statement.
It should have read, "looks like every other troglodyte internet gathering these days. "

Anyone must admit that the quality of content has dropped off in the last 3 years. I think most of us are aware of that and so refrain from posting.

There have been ups and downs. On the up side, we seem to have fewer "let's see how many senseless posts I can make" and "polls about nonsense."

I refrain from entering the arguments (name-calling) and I attempt to post when I think I can offer something useful (like about vintage guitars, electronics, mathematics). It's best to leave the trolls hungry.

There's only one place I would go for that: WARMOTH

I kind of like when we got sidetracked on Marmite and Vegimite; build threads; helping people build a guitar when they do not have one; and answering honest questions....that is what has always made this Forum a place I come back too. I do not like head trips or people provoking. I respect other folks opinions, even if their different than mind. When it is all said and done, we should be able to put a smile on our face and jam a few bars!

I expect that if you stay tuned, a one piece hard ash might eventually show up here. The odds are definitely in favor of it. In a pinch, of course, there's always 007.

I don't know about content...but I know the quality of my wood sure has dropped off in the last several years.

Troglodyte comments aside, we're not talking about acoustic guitars here, we're talking about electric guitars. The bridges and nuts of electric guitars are mounted to wood and those are the only two points on the guitar where the wood is in contact with the vibrating section of the string. Ferules and tuning pegs do not come in contact with the vibrating portion of the string so they do not factor one iota in the vibrational character of the string because they're simply not involved except in their contribution to mass and density of the guitar overall and that is extremely negligible. The nut and the bridge are firmly attached to the wood and that contact is also under pressure due to the angle of string tension applied to those items. Wood therefore does act as a portion of the strings' vibrational character but mostly in the form of damping, not enhancing or contributing except in very narrow ranges of frequency where wood can set up sympathetic vibrations and that also is extremey negligible. Different woods damp vibrations in different ways. The tonal differences between woods may be slim but they are not non-existant. Pickups mounted to plastic scratchplates are not in direct contact with the wood or the strings but in fact that issue is moot to begin with as the pickups do not sense wood vibrations because wood is non magnetic so the mounting method does not factor in. Pickups only sense string vibrations which are slightly affected by the choice of wood.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Shouldn't The Point Be To Learn Something And Have Some Fun ? I Know My Bass Weighs More Than My Guitar But They Both Sound Great. That's What I Know About Wood.
