I definitely dont think that Les pauls sound "better' than strats. I think they have more sustain, but sounding "better", I dont think there's ANY way to quantify if somethign sounds better. The sustain is for a few reasons; more weight, better string to body coupling, humbucking pickups, and yes; a set neck. The maple cap adds definition. Anyone who's ever played a '55, or "worn" version, or most Epiphone LPs, and the a Gibson version with a maple cap knows the that the all mahogony '55 or Epi is darker sounding than one w/maple cap. I built my strat with a single piece of wood because its what I wanted, but I dont think it did much to add anything to the sound, and actually, it ended up being heavier than if I used a two piece. Its counterintuative, but true. If you go to the Warmoth site, and look at their unfinished bodies, you'll notice that the one piece bodies are heavier. Les Pauls, on the other hand, will have a noticeable difference in tone the more pieces of wood you use. Anyone who's ever stripped a 70's LP, and seen the crappy butcherblock hunks of wood they glued togeher can attest to that. Sustain, and resonance are mistakenly attributed together. It seems the more resonant, themore sustain, but its actually the opposite. You have a perceived increase in sustain because the resonance increases volume, but you always sacrafice one for the other. This is something I learned first hand. When I play my ES, it seems like it has more sustain because it rings longer, but its actually the resonance. This becomes apparent when playing through a clean amp. another thing that surprised me was how the charactaristics of mahogony almost is the complete opposite when comparing acoustic vs electric. Electric will be a darker sound w/ more sustain, whereas a mahogony tends to actually sound brighter on an acoustic. I found this doing a neck reset on a D- whchi is all mahogony. I just picked up a Dreadnaught with mahogony back and sides. It has less "bloom" than one with rosewood back and sides. Tonally, it actually seems to have more in common with my -000-28 that has rosewood back/sides. Its more balanced sounding, and like I said, I found it counterintuative.

BTW; I have a MIM Reissue that has a 3 piece body, just like alot of American stds. The MIM Stds have up to 7(ive heard from luthiers and repair techs that have stripped, but Ive never seen it myself).

....and dont bother answering this unless you know what your talking about. OK

I know, I know, I know! The reason I know is because we used to have a "gutbucket" in an old folk group I played in. It consisted of an upside down washtub, (galvanized), and the "fretboard" was pine 2x4 cut on an angle, narrowing at the top so you could get your hand around it,and it was fretless. No pickups - it was an accoustic instrument! And it sounded great! A nice bass thump!

So the answer is pine. I know what I'm talking about!!

(It would be years before we were able to borrow an electric bass and Fender Bassman."

I dont know if the people on this forum are younger now or what, but there seems to be a level of direspect that I didnt find here when I first signed up a few years ago.. Now it reminds me of the forums on Ultimate-guitar. Alot of 15 year olds, who cant play or know nearly as much as they act like they do, being extremely rude to people who try to help.

........you won't see any of that from the regulars..We reject it outright.

OK, but here's what Im thinking about.

I'd like to build a stratocaster. But its got to have the best tone.

In order to do that, I think I need a one piece super hard ash body and a maple neck.

But what fingerboard sounds the best.

I heard SRV only used fingerboards made from some weird South American mahagany.

SRV has the best tone, as everybody knows.

Should I buy a neck with that special wood on it?

Jay, I can honestly tell you that I've completely changed my mind about tonewoods. I believe they offer nothing to a guitar, other than providing stability.

The notion of the wood acting on the string is preposterous. That would cause all sorts of distortions of the signal that we just don't get.

Anyway thats all I'm contributing to this thread. I'll tell you privately why I think like I do.

I completely agree this forum looks like every other troglodyte internet gathering. Exactly why I can't be bothered anymore and outright refuse to post about stuff I get up to.
