The typical Fender pickup has the black lead coming off of the left eyelet. Other manufacturers do the opposite (and maybe not consistently so). You probably know all of this (being an old pro), but it's easy to end up with out-of-phase pickups if one doesn't check the magnetic polarity and the wiring of the mixed bag of pickups being used. A few words about what you got and what you did should be of interest to the "novice" builder/reassembler. Like: depending on their magnetic polarities, you may be able to have a RW/RP hum-cancelling set up in switch positions 2 & 4.

I didn't intend to call you "old", X, replace that word with "experienced" if there's any offense.

LOL, well I guess both interpretations apply! Old and pro (ha ha, wanabe experienced...have you ever been experienced? Remember Jimi?) Anyhow, yes, I have a sticky pad on the wall in my guitar room that tells the hot leads for various pickup manufacturers. I learn a long time ago about the reverse wound TX Specials. I was like, WHY DID THEY DO THAT? And one only has to tear down a new build so many times, after it is already strung up, to fix a misplaced lead wire. Like, WOW, position #2 on this Strat sounds like a weak, thin, piece of ice..... RULE #1 = Always check before soldering!

Anyhow another cool trick to used for single coil pickups is this: If you take two neck pickups that are wound normally, and put the tops facing each other, they will repel each other. Like wise, if you have two reverse wound pickups and put them "top to top" they will repel each other. If you have a neck pickup (wound normal) and put it "top to top" with a middle pickup (reverse wound) they stick together. I have an old neck pickup sitting under my bench that I know is standard wound. I just grab it and put it "top to top" with the other single coils I am working with and know right away if they are reverse or standard wound. Even Lace Sensors can come reverse wound.

I never could figure out why some pickup companies use different colors for the hot lead?? Like Seymour Duncan uses BLACK as their hot lead and GREEN as their ground (with Red & White as the colors where you can split the coils if it is a humbucker). Then DiMarzio uses uses RED as the hot lead and GREEN as the ground. Red make some sense to me! (They use White & Black as the color where you can split the coils if it is a humbucker).

Anyhow, just a little geeky guitar info there. Many of you know this stuff already!

Sure, that attraction/replusion "trick" is a good way to sort magnetic polarities when the pickups are "free" (not installed in a the pickguard). A compass is the only way to determine absolute polarity of the tops of the pickups.

As for "hot" and "ground," I ignore the colors of the wires and go by the eyelet to which the wires are soldered: left one is my ground and right one is the hot; except for the middle pickup if it is to be RW/RP.

I know I'm ready for this one Mr. X!!! 8)

Nutter is going to have to post this on his thread for builds. 8)

I bally well hope he does!!

Xhefri: This build looks tasty! I am delighted to see a build from you which is more experimental than your traditional Strat Plus/Ultra expertise - it brings spice! Cool! And from your projects in the past I know this is going to be one mean burner! 8)

Carry on, lads, this is looking like fun!

Cheers,

Yay!! Another "X" build!

Please spill as much minutiae as you feel like doing...I don't know any of this stuff about Hamburglers or tricks for pup polarities. And I'm one of the "old farts" so I don't have much time left before I go to that "Great Gig in the Sky"...

OK, this is for Mr C. Well, what do you think...if I found a decent MIJ 62 Reissue Strat Body and sent it to you with a vintage Tele bridge plate and string ferrules, and you could peice in some wood in the bridge pickup area and fill in the whole trem cavity, to make this a hard tail Strat with a vintage Tele bridge? I thing that would be a cool co-partner project. Would like it black and I would have to make a custom pickguard for it. What do ya think Mr. C.????

Well, you have another old fart, er, I mean, old "part" on-board. I've got myself settled in and am eagerly awaiting what presents as an eclectic mix for a fine build/instrument.

There are several reasons manufacturers do this with color coding and polarity. Some are:
- To scare the consumer into sticking with their particular brand.
- To not let another brand 'dictate' their color coding and/or polarities as the industry standard.
- Spite.
- Simply what the designer was most comfortable with.
- Possible patent infringement.

I was going to work on this today, but another 6" of snow (15 cm for some of you) with now 2.5 feet on the ground! (almost .5 meter) NOW they are saying another 18 inches is on the way for tonight! We have 1 mile of private road so......go figure what I will be doing today.

So 3 or 4 days from now it winds up on the east coast. Good part of condo living, someone else gets to push the snow blower. Beware the eye brows of March. :?

Killer idea for a build X, My vote is to send the body to Ceri, get him to pull out some of that 40 year old sycamore that he's got ageing in his cellar, fill up the gap, screw on the tele bridge and send it back.

But then again, I'm sitting over here in Aus behind a computer and all I have to do is read the thread, so do what you guys want to do, I'll look forward to the results regardless of the choices made :)

Dan

Good stuff! Just what the forum needed. You can't beat an X man build thread.

I take it the "Mouse Ears" on the neck pocket (only recently learnt about those!) will allow a Tele neck?
