How do you Americans survive? You must all be walking around hungry, nursing badly burnt fingers. :P

I have heard of, and quite often utilize oven mitts...I may not be fat, but I eat like I am, anything to speed the process of bringing food to the table is cool in my book...lol.

Now on to the important subject here...I need to peruse the Strat forum more often. I can't believe I gave been missing this build! Nice progress Xhefri...I'll be following along from here. Looks like I have some reading to do to catch up. I'm very intrigued by the hybrid build...I think it's required to post this build in the Tele forum as well...
Seriously though. I look forward to the finished product.

Ready and waiting with the oven mitts.

See....where he's headed?.... they call it something like 'luau'.....and they don't use oven mitts to get the pig out of the poke. More like long poles cut from trees. All this counter-culture can become a bit confusing at times

Well, maybe I will get this painted this week or weekend and put together. I canceled my trip because of having to have a layover in Tokyo. Too much uncertainty about being there. For ZZDoc, I was headed to the Philippines, not Vanuatu on this trip. I think we will be headed to Vanuatu the middle of April. So stayed tuned for more to come! I am a bit excited about playing this Stratotelecaster....... :P

Ok, I never had the time over the weekend to do this! (Man these threads sure get buried fast!) Anyhow, started doing the final spraying on this spot repair, so I can get this odd duck together. I started out by sanding the primed area and the top of the body with 600 grit sandpaper. I sanded to the edges where I want to break the finish. Since this is lacquer, it is very easy to work with and can blend into the original finish pretty easy. I might strip the whole body down next fall and do a "proper" refinish on it in urethane.

Image
Image

Normally when I do a complete refinish I use this tool I made from an old neck plate. I mount the body on this and then have a hole drilled at an angle in a beam in my shop where I can stick the end of this device in and then I can turn the body to spray every part of it evenly.

Image
Image

BUT, since this is just going to be a spot repair, I will use a low pressure small gun and shoot it on the bench in my guitar room.

Image

Next I need to mask off the areas I do not want the finish applied. I want a good amount of surface for blending. What I am doing right now is to apply the color coat over the repaired area. Then I will let it dry and then shoot clear over the whole area blending out to the edges using a thinner and thinner mix of clear. This is yet to come...right now I just want to get the black on and let it dry good enough to seal off the primer to prevent the old finish from lifting.

When I turn around in my guitar room, alas! Too many unfinished projects!!!

Image

Next will be the clear coats and then a good drying time before wet sanding and buffing. Then I can start to assemble this Stratele!!

That 'swimming pool' rout is the reason why I couldn't rout the trem cavity in my '97MIA Standard for a 9V battery when I dropped an EMG DG20 in there. I just didn't want to keep messing with having to lift the scratchplate to change it.

A few days ago I showed you the start of the spot repair process on this body. I let the color coat dry overnight to help seal off the primer, and then, the next day, shot 4 coats of clear lacquer over the top. I started spraying over the color coat area first, and allowed it to dry for an hour in a well heated room. Then 3 more successive coats were added. The last two were thinned down, with the 4th being about 75% thinner for blending the edges. The trick to this is having enough clear on the top to sand and buff without going through, while breaking the clear on the edges.

Image
Image

Here is the body after the clear dried. It is a little bit rough, but not bad, and nothing a little wet sanding can't take care of.

Image

The trick to this is sanding enough without sanding too much. I started out with 1000 grit and work the finish down, wiping it with a dry terry cloth from time to time to see if the defects were removed. Then I progressed to 1200 grit and then finally 2000 grit. Lacquer is so nice to work with and buff out sweet. Smooth as a baby's bottom!

Image
Image

Next is the buffing process using a good rubbing compound. The whole concept of finishing work, in automotive or in an application like this is using the right types of sandpaper. To level any filler, you want the paper to be course enough to level the surface and not merely make it smooth. Then as you apply primers you work down to less course papers filling in the scratched and minor defects. One wants to progress to the point where, after you put on the finish, you are using finer and finer papers. The last step is the rubbing compound, which really is an abrasive too, and is working the 2000 grit scratches down even finer.

Image

Then even a finer polishing compound is used. This is called a "swirl mark remover." The end result is scratches so microscopic that they create luster!

Image
Image

After a cleaning with a clean terry cloth, you can see the results:

Image

Here are before and after pictures. I turned this body on every side on my work bench and I can not even tell it was damaged. The blends on the edges are perfect.

Image

Now the fun part gets to start! Putting this Odd Duck together. I need to put in the brass bridge pin inserts and get the neck bolted on and..... well that is yet to come!

I got a bit anxious today and put this Stratele together. The first thing I had to do, which was an oversite on my part, was to fit the pickguard to the neck. As you might know, the butt end of a Strat neck is rounded and a Tele neck is very square. Using the drill press as a router and some hand files I got it to fit pretty well:

Image

Next is more sacrilege. Bad enough that I am putting a Fender MIJ neck on a USA Strat Plus body, but now this????? And I am sure when I sell this on ePay I will get around $30,000 for it. Custom Shop Stratotelecaster one off, road worn, and all the hype.

Image
Image

Almost forgot the spring claw. I will use 4 springs on this. I have a bridge with a brass block, wow, we all know those will make a Strat Duck sing...ya... sure. But anyhow got this on and turned her over and put in the brass ferrules for the bridge posts. I used my mighty hammer to drive these in. And then when they were close to seating, used the plastic end of a 1/4 inch driver to finish the job. The bottom is curved so it drove the brass ferrules in where they seat well.

Image
Image
Image

The neck fit sooo nice. For those of you who have not looked through the whole threat, I showed what you have to do to get the neck to fit right a few pages back.

Image
Image

NeXt comes putting in the pickguard...love those dental tools for holding down the wires while the solder cools off. Oh, and I did mess up. After all my confidence about wiring this right, the Little 59 Humbucker was backwards. Man it had some weird nasal tones! Now the green wire is the hot lead and the black is the ground.... much easier than turning around the leads on the two other pickups. This has the mini-switches that give a lot of variables. She is starting to come together FAST....... Kind of eViL looking, eh??

Image
Image
Image

I was worried how the neck would line up, but to my chagrin, man it was prefect. Infact, after getting the strings on, it played almost perfect. I was thinking I might need to toss a shim under the heel of the neck but nope.

Image
Image

Here is the almost finished product after a quick wipe down. Being black it needs a good clean up. An ODD DUCK from an OLD FART..... The Stratotelecaster Custom Shop, ya sure guitar. I might add, man it does feel great. Odd, having a Tele feel with the 7.25 radius in a Strat body. I like it. And the pickups come alive when the RAT is turned on. Distortion beast. The bridge pickup is a little weak in trying to keep up with the other two. And it does feedback with distortion on and you're too close to the amp. But it plays GREAT! Next picts will be the cleaned up and finished Geetar.....

Beautiful! The refinishing job you did is top notch work. Though it may be viewed as a 'simple' color, any one that has ever done any kind of finishing work knows that black is one of, if not the most difficult to achieve flawless results with. I am truly impressed. Great job.

btw...The Tele neck on the Strat body looks awesome.
