What woudl you guys recommend for a multi-effects pedal?

I play mainly in church so don't need to have a ful board with tons of pedals to lug around and a multi-effects seems like it would meet my needs. I play straight into the sound board (they don't like amps on the stage... boo...)

Thanks,

Jeff

The Boss ME30 has a lot of useful stuff and seems more user-friendly than some of the others.

Mate, that does suck with no amp on stage. It seems like I'm giving this piece of advice a fair bit today.

You want either this:

Zoom G9.2tt

$299 @ musiciansfriend.com

Boss GT-10
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79FNhfbAVx8
$499.00 @ musiciansfriend.com

Line 6 POD X3 Live
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBzmDozysk0
can't find one online to buy as they are discontinued, I got mine for $300

Digitech do one too, but their geared more towards integrating the pedal with your existing rig (which you aren't allowed to use a real rig).

I've used the line 6 and the Boss GT, bang for buck I like the Line 6. Theres a much newer option out for them, called the HD line with a looper but the X3 will do everything you need(minus loops), so I'd recommend that one.

Theres no need to review any of these, if you HAVE to play Guitar -> desk -> monitor (ahhh wheres the cabinet to fall back on!??!) and thats your only option, you MUST get one of the 3 above, and they all do amp modelling pretty well.

+1 on the POD! I have the XT, great by itself with headphones, direct into sound board, or as a preamp for guitar amp. Plenty of amp models and effects for just about any sound that you can think of. Programmable and up-datable too. :D

I just looked at Craigslist and there's a guy about 15 miles from my house selling a Line 5 Pod X3 Live for $125. Says it's new, used a few times. It's close enough I can drive there and check it out.

Other than the obvious, anything I should be looking for?

Jeff

Check that all the footswtiches work, and also check that the wah pedal works, make sure the display is functioning properly. Cos basically if it's broke you can't fix it.

i used to have a ME -30, great little pedal, but if you want pedals that you will not need to upreage for the rest of your life then go individual pedals... or rack mounted units...

The ME units are good, but with no stage sound I'd choose the POD. Dedicated preamp simulator and dedicated output to the desk.

Sounds a very cushy gig. Just rock up with your guitar and multiFX every Sunday and Wendesday.

I gigged a POD V2 and floorboard into a Valvestate 9000 power amp for a good while. Good unit, easy to setup and use. If the venue had decent monitors, I didn't even bother with the poweramp or speaker and just ran it into the desk. Lots of people appreciated how fast and compact it all was.
The only reason I don't use it anymore is because I got bored of it and sold it.
Stupid of me.
Heres the power amp I used.

Notice the 2 channel volumes. With 2 speakers and the POD's 2 inputs (channel A and B). It really bought out the delay's, tremolo and chorus effects. You could acheive the sound by running both outputs of a POD into the desk.

Thinking outside the box, couldn't you always have your amp tucked away out of sight and mic'd? If need be, hide it behind some fake houseplants... :D

We still haven't gotten to electric guitar in my church -- I'm playing acoustic until people get used to the guitar (even though the response has been positive so far).

If you have not already purchased the POD, check into the Digitech RP1000, It is designed to be integrated into a normal rig or run direct to a PA or just use a power amp such as Nikininja suggested (way cool Valvestate power amp, by the way - I would love to get a hold of one of those). Anyway, I use the RP1000 both at practice and in live play (if that is the rig I decide to go with at the time). It does not disappoint, its made in a steel chassis, has good switches and is EXTREMELY versatile.

I just purchased a Boss ME 25 and have been I have been impressed with it so far. It also has plug in for recording as well. So far I have dialed in good heavy and clean sounds. Stil searching for a good fat Blues sound. I have only had it for about a week and really haven't had time to really see what all it can do yet.

I recommend buying the power supply cable (don't come with it) otherwise you will go through batteries like crazy. It also has 1 line in, 2 lines out and headphone connection.

:-)
I played bass and acoustic for years. Our electric player decided to go in a different direction helping a friend start up a new church in another area. He's having fun but it left us without an electric player.

We had another guy who could play bass (he had no interest in acoustic or electric) so that left me to play electric. I have an amp and a couple pedals but it was just for messing around home but I didn't want to mess with a bunch of pedals so the multi-FX interests me.

Talked about the amp on stage but we have pretty decent monitors and the others in the band are more or less luke warm on the idea. The worship leader guy is concerned about everyone wanting their own amp on stage and the resulting noise. I think he's over reacting but he's the leader, I'm just the guitar picker. :D

Yes, we're fairly new into the whole guitar contemporary thing so having a bunch of amps on stage could put some in the congregation into culture shock. too far / too fast for some.

Playing in church isn't really about the performance but more about setting the tone for worship. This playing electric in a band thing is new to me. I've been playing acoustic in bluegrass / old-time for about 30 years but the electric cover band thing is new.

Thanks all you all for your suggestions. I'm going to go look at a Line 6 Pod a guy locally listed on Craigs List this evening. I'll let you guys know if I bought it.

Jeff

Pick up some tweed reissues... it'll remind everyone of the good ol' days. :D

Nik,

I can't believe how similar our setup was.

I was running my strat into pod XT live out stereo into a 9005 series marshall power amp (all valves baby).

Indeed the stereo delay was a luxury I do miss, but the setup, the number of cables, setting the volume and positioning my two cabs either side of me to lap up the stereo goodness. It was just all a little too work. The HRD does a great clean tone, combo styling makes it a one trip pony (pod over the shoulder, amp and guitar in hand)

Now the POD is purely an effects unit, except for With or Without you and my Solo tone (which is a modelled plexi jumped with a red comp infront and a digital delay out the end... juicy juicy lead tone...)

Dan
