...And grinding an Allen key to a tapered version is exactly what mr. Erlewine used to do before commercializing the product to The Gripper Wrench...

Hi Rock Star

Thanks for the reply. I went back to verify that 3/16" is the size that I used on my truss rod.

I have metric and imperial allen keys (hex) and I checked all of the relevant sizes in my MIM Fender Stratocaster. The keys are fine quality and I even measured them with a vernier. The ends are not worn at all. The only key that worked measured 4.75mm which is 3/16" imperial. Any other size was too large or too loose.

I can't speak for the American Fender as I do not have one, but my MIM truss rod head is undoubtedly 3/16".

Fender also sells this tool on the net for truss rod adjustment. Again whether it is only MIMs that use 3/16" I can't say.

Thank's but I'm not a rock star just stratele52 ; )

Quality allen wrench/ key are avalaible at any Home Depot , Husky brand is a good name. buy a complete set , not expensive

Not sure those with "ball end " like you show is the best , it is a compromise when access is not easy but can slip.

Actually you can buy those ball end allens at Sears/Sears Hardware...although not individually (they only seem to come in a set). Personally I've found them to work -very- well, although admittedly I've never tried one on a truss rod head that was already damaged. In a situation where access is a problem however, they are absolutely invaluable.

Just my $.02,
Jim

Seems to me a simple fix. Take a flathead screwdriver of the right size, that has sharp tapered edges, and push it into the nut. Nuts are soft metal, so they destroy themselves before they damage the truss rod. Back the nut out, throw it away and put a new one in.

I have the Fender 3/16' tool and standard allen wrenches. I like the long T-handle ones for more precise control. The Stew Mac gripper tool works wonderfully, and it would be very helpful to get the old truss rod nut off with it. The guy above mentioned the ebay seller with the replacement nuts, he's right--get one from him and replace it. Make sure you put a drop of 3-in-1 oil on the threads before you put it on though. Good luck to you.
