I have a cheap squire and I would just like to relic it nicely like a Black1 relic/SRV#1 relic. How would I do this? Also how would I sand the neck down to a smooth finish? Thanks!

There are some info on the internet regarding use of coffee, rocks, heat and other chemicals. There are quick ways and then there is playing over time.

Hi The Original,

Here are a couple of excellent resources for relic tips.

Click the links at the top of the site for each step, materials, etc.
http://www.relicdeluxe.com/

And some demos from the Mike Eldred of the Fender Custom Shop.

Don't put it in a case, use buffing compound and just treat the body like an ashtray.

If you use the buffing compound only rub it on where you actually rub against the body. Also you can use sand paper on the neck. Also put the bridge in some salt water.

Well, I've got some tips on aging plastic parts at the following link...

http://www.fender.com/community/forums/viewtopic.php?t=49144&sid=7723e93b1a41b899f3954090066f8756

There are a lot of other good tips at http://www.relicdeluxe.com (as shimmilou noted.) I've had mixed success aging poly bodies but it can be done if you are patient and don't try to over do it.

I know this is going to sound strange but you basically use the same techniques you would use to antique modern furniture..
On furniture they use a chain for the dents and dings ..That don't mean swing like your trying to break someones jaw they suggest you lightly strike it ..
Then for the scratches this is a tough one a cheese grater mixed with sand paper and steel wool so it varies the depth of the scratches..
I will have to get back with you on what to use to antique the hardware.

Heads up: Squiers (and most Fenders) are encased in a thick bullet proof shell of poly. Chipping and sanding away at the poly will not have the same results as doing it to a nitro finished guitar. If you're not careful it's going to look funny and unnatural. Your Squier will just look abused instead of that nice worn in look of often played vintage guitars from the 50's and 60's.

It's scientific theory that it would take 1,526 years of continuous playing to naturally relic a poly finish Squier to look like SRV's #1

Strip off the poly finish, prime the guitar and painstakingly apply several coats of a beautiful nitro finish then proceed to beat the living snot out of it.

You can do a decent relic on a urethane finished guitar. All I did was to strip the hardware off the body. Then used car polish and a buffing attatchment on a orbital sander to thin the finish right down. The black turned to a lovely almost pastel colour. As for bare wood, nicks and dents, less is more.
Use boot polish or creosote to darken any exposed wood.
