Unless the guitar sounded super-uber fantastic I agree with your decision to steer clear. Too many fish in the water to deal with a guitar with truss rod issues.

They wanted $900 for it until the truss rod issue became apparent, now they will go $599 with the 60th anniversary case no other blemishes.

if they have dropped it that far, thats about all they can.
(the rule of 100% profit) hum........ they are nice playing guitars.
actually, who knows if the tech even knows what hes doing?
maybe there is a bur on the threaded nut and hes hit that
and didnt work through it?
here is what i would do. see if they have their usual money back guarantee.
(30 days on used i believe) if yes, then buy it and take it to a different luthier.
see what the new opinion is. might cost you $25 to get it looked at.
if he delivers you bad news, take it back and tell them you thought about the situation and think its best you look at another guitar. how did it get brought to GC attention that they looked at the trussrod anyways?
those guitars play great. this might be an idea for you. i would do it that way if they have the 30 day deal on it.

To be frank, you'd have to be daft to buy a guitar with a busted neck.
The thing has reached it's limit, it's as good as broke. Offer em $400 for the body, trem, pickup harness/guard and tuners. Tell em to keep the neck.

X-ray the neck. 8)

That'll settle it, one way or the other.

They said that the guitar is a no return item. The tech that first looked at the guitar didn't notice that the truss rod was jacked. He set the intonation and the action was already set fine. I guess last week when one of the techs was doing a more in depth setup he noticed that the truss rod wouldn't give. The then marked it down and are selling it as is.

I appreciate the advice. I never did add that I am in Indiana and the guitar is in New Jersey...so I couldn't even check it out. Buying a guitar site unseen is tough enough, let alone buying one with a major issue. If anyone is in the Jersey area, you may want to at least check it out. If you do, ask for Roger, he's a good dude.

i was just reading in a book i have by dan erlewine, titled how to make your guitar play great. on page 24 (for those that have the book) dan repairs a problem just like this one by adding washers before the truss nut on a les paul. problem solved.

I am honestly not sure. The action and intonation is fine, but the Guitar Center tech said that when they tried to adjust it, he couldn't turn it anymore and it was "maxed out".

"A Guitar Center Tech"; isn't this a paradox?

No Sir, that would be an Oxymoron.

I have heard of this solution. I think for me the risk is too high, especially since I cannot play it before buying it and I can't return it. Like I said, anyone in the area want to give it a shot, not bad for $600 if the washers fix it.

It's more of a medicine to mask a problem thing than a solution. Make no bones about it, Dan Erlewine would tell you the sky is green if it sold another of his tools. The wood of the neck has a weakness that has resulted in the neck nearing the end of it's usefulness/stability. End of story.
