Thanks ZZDoc - I was just wondering can I get the same types of sounds that the EC strat gets, using my strat plus and an OD pedal. The original EC strat had 3 gold lace sensors like my plus but the EC added the battery operated mid boost circuit. It looks like I will be just fine using myTS9 with my plus.

I years ago I had a GLS equipped Strat which I ran through a Proco RAT, and I've also used an original TS-9 which belonged to a friend. Each yielded that nice creamy sustain, though I have no comparison as to the increase in gain obtained by each type of boost system.

If I ever see an EC strat at Guitar Center I will have to try one out so that I can try the mid boost circuit. While looking at the green one posted here earlier I noticed I didn't see a switch for turning on the mid boost. How is the MB turned on?

In the original design for the guitar, the midboost was wired active/passive with a mini-toggle switch to turn it on. That idea was scrapped because Eric would be using the guitar active all the time. The boost circuit is activated when the cable is plugged in to the jack which is wired to close the circuit, and the level is controlled by the second 'tone' pot in the line of three. The jack must be removed from the guitar when not in use to conserve battery life. The TBX is the first tone pot in the line. Only in the Masterbuilt guitar is the TBX swapped out for a standard tone pot as Eric prefers it.

Why not fit the mid boost to your guitar. I have one on of my 'lesser' strats. I fitted it to see what it would be like but before I routed the body I tucked it under the pickguard. I knew I liked it on my EC guitars so I fitted it to my mim office guitar.

Nikininja, has also done this conversion with success, and without having to alter the body cavity routing. BTW: did you manage to find the gear specifications on Eric's website?

I searched the internet including Erics site and it appears as if he does not use an overdrive pedal but uses the mid boost instead. If the EC model guitars are wired as you said with the mid boost always on I would not be interested. It seems like if that is the way they are wired, you could never get the true single coil sound. I am surprised that there is not a switch to turn the circuit on and off.

The midboost is "off" if the dial (second tone knob) is on "0". No problems getting a "true single coil sound" at all.

Hi Doc

I'm not sure where the info came from, I've kinda always know if that makes sense. Probably from reading posts on this forum. The mid boost kit was a Fender item and reasonably priced.

Ah....a bit of a misunderstanding here. There was a question about his stage gear. There's a link on 'Where's Eric' to that info. Not only does it address the present, but looks back over time.

I was always amazed how the 25dB mid-boost would sound with the other Lace Sensors (especially the Red), both in single-coil and dually humbucker formats.

The Clapton circuit was primarily designed to work with the Gold singles, though I saw many guitarists using it with different flavours of Lace Sensors, including full-sized humbuckers as well.

Recently Andy blended the mid-boost circuit with the S1 switch system. The result was an wonderfully versatile combination providing an impressive array of knockout tonal options.

However, I never heard sound clips with the S1/Mid-boost combo.

I had the Custom Shop build me a guitar on the Clapton platform w/ SCN pickups. The guitar was 'killer'. So is the Gilmour I swapped it out for. Win some lose some. G.A.S. is a terrible disease.
