A augamented 5th, no 3rd/ Fmaj (no 5th). Depending on what the rest of the instruments are doing.

Open on the A, F on the D?

Well, that would be just a minor 6th interval. A chord has to be three notes, otherwise it's just an interval. Unless I'm wrong, which happens a lot. ^^

You're absolutely correct from a traditional standpoint. Diads are recoginzed as chords these days though. Hence the chords ambiguous naming. Mi6/Aug5th/Maj-no5th. You'd need a minor 3rd for a minor 6th, a major 3rd for a aug 5th and a 5th for it to be Fmaj. Strictly speaking. Thats why it's name is dependant on what other instruments in the piece are playing. Wherever they lie, determines the name of that chord.

That's why I love this forum, I learn things. ^^

To fenderflamestrat, due to ambiguity I propose you just write this chord down as the F'in A Chord. ^^
