Do I win a funny thread title award?

Please give this clip a listen:

American Standard Strat SSS w/ Original strings - Fender Blues Deluxe RI w/ Celestion Alnico Gold Speaker - through SM57

My question concerns the boinginess or twanginess of the factory shipped original set of strings on my 2010 AM STNDRD Strat SSS.
Can you hear it?
I "think" these are .009 string set. To get rid of the weird string boinginess would I
simply up the gauge to the .010" string set?

Thoughts please

Well, i'm not an expert but i think your guitar needs a good setup. When i got my American Special last month, the strings buzzed all over the fretboard... With a bit of patiences, I figured it out.

P.S. This was my first guitar setup

Hi Twinhit,

Is this the link? I tried copying the one from your post, and I got a "Not Found" error.

Nice little diddy there! You would certainly gain some output, maybe a more solid tone by switching to tens. I switched my 08 Am Std to tens, which was better, but I wasn't really satisfied with the sound until I replaced the cast block with a steel Callaham, now it sounds much better, less twangy, more like a Strat. The stock cast block has copper in it, which may contribute to the sound that your are describing.

Thanks for the compliment. :)
Regarding the block:
That cast steel block with the copper alloy.. was that tapered or beveled
for tremolo clearance or was it a rectangular block like the Callaham?
Excuse me if I am being to lazy to take off the trem spring plate.
I am thinking the string gage has an awful lot to do with the boinginess - not to
discount the validity of more mass in the block's construction contributing to greater
sustain. Looks like Callaham has a real good product on their hands.
You wouldn't happen to have any clips would ya??

Thanks again. :D

I think paulstrings might be right. It sounds as if your tremolo is wobbling up and down as you strum, which gives the chords a strange and yet appealing "warbling" sound like from an old tape recorder that's not consistent in speed. (pitch going up and down)

Is that the BOING BOING BOING you refer to? :)

I would put on 10s, give it a good setup and make sure the trem doesn't move around too much, you'll have to tighten the trem claw I would say.

However, nice playing!
And paulstrings, congrats on your first setup! :)

Cheers

Nutter

PS: Yep great thread title!

Sound right to me you need a set up so you might as well go with the tens also.

Sounds right for MIA standard with the buzz and some string dullness. Try a setup as suggested with the new strings to get rid of buzz and adjust pickups. Your bridge pickup is way louder and it may be too close to strings causing some "boingness" and "warbleness" (hows that for new words)

Yes, tapered for more range with trem use. Man, I only have one half-way-decent video for the sound. I had some effects going, and the playing isn't great, don't know if it will help or not, but here it is.

As stated a proper set up is needed. If your not up for doing it, and for the price you pay for a MIA, perhaps a free set up by the seller is in order.

Before changing string gauge or your setup, try the same gauge string in a different material. Pure nickel strings sound much different than nickel plated steel strings. If you don't know what you have now, invest the $12 to buy one set of each and see if one solves your issue.

The very "BOING" sound I am referring to can be heard at 3:38-3:40 in the clip.

You can also here the same boing, boing in the first intro notes and that last note in this song.

Any specific brand I should be looking for?

I've also wondered about flat-wound strings. Pyramid's got a set for around $25

I have always found D'Addario nickel wound strings to be more free from annoying overtones and they ring truer than most strings.Where they're wound with nickel not just nickel plated makes the difference I believe. They make nickel wound XLs in all the popular gauges.

Thanks guts,
I'll put that on my list.
I think I have a set of Ernie Ball Slinky .010" set. I might try them before I set out on
a purchasing my first Pure Nicks.

EPN120 Super Light 9-41
EPN110 Regular Light 10-45

There's certainly no shortage strings - that's for sure.
