Get what ya like, keep on playing them until one just "clicks" one that just hugs you and squeezes you. a.ka. the one you take home or else. On a totally professional standpoint (though I am no professional anything yet) is to check out a nice mexi strat. Good versitile critter and you can teach yourself a lot on it. Kinda like going to a southern buffet to figure out what you like about the food. Hope you find a good strat, or tele, or even a good *cough* Gibson *cough* if you can afford one. Hey if it likes you than you better get it before you regret it.

Let me know how it goes! :D

My opinion;

If you are just starting to play and need a good guitar to learn on, then it will be hard to beat one of Fenders' Squire line of guitars.

You get a lot of guitar for the money spent.

And if you change you mind later about wanting to play guitar - you don't have a lot of money invested in the instrument.

On the other hand if you decide to stay with guitar (which is what we all hope for) the Squire will take you far enough to get you ready for your really great 2nd guitar.

As for which model - Tele, Strat - to me that is up to your personal preference.

I will say, of those two choices, I have found Strats to be more comfortable to play - with all their curves and cut outs and cut aways. But a standard Tele seems to hold its tuning a little better.

Also, just as important to your sound, is the amp you pick to go with the guitar.

Again - just my opinon

It would be hard to go wrong with either the Strat or the Tele. Ask yourself what you expect out of the guitar, and then go play examples of each. When you find the "right guitar" it will be the one that "speaks to you", that allows you to freely express the guitar sounds you hear in your head.
I would suggest the VG Strat; it would solve the debate of Strat or Tele; it has both. Or, if a more traditional, organic guitar is the answer, take a look at the American Deluxe Seried of Teles and Strats. Those SCN pickups are hard to beat for performance!
For me, I choose a American Deluxe Strat for it's simple strait forwardness and sonic performance. Ultimately, keep it as simple and direct as possible.

First off, decide how much money you want to spend. Then double that amount. Then get both of them.

Ok, really. Get the strat. This is a strat lounge. I have a strat. I love it. I want you to have one too. :)

I'm on my first Fender guitar which I bought in December 2006. It's a blue Standard (Mexican) Strat HSS (Humbucker and 2 single coils). I love it. It's comfortable to play, it has a versatile sound, and can be warm, funky, or totally rocked out. I plan on keeping it, even if I buy a more expensive guitar later. If you're looking for a starter, you'd have a hard time beating this, especially for the money.

(Years ago I had an Ibanez, which I traded for a studio Les Paul, which I sold to buy a keyboard. I then bought the strat, and honestly, so far I like the strat the best of the three.)

There is just no other. A Fender Strat will get you far man. There is just something about them, thier look gives you thet excitment, that "Rock 'N Roll" feeling. Its an immortal guitar. But again its a matter of taste more then any thing else. About the money, it depends. You can get a fine guitar in relatively low budget, but if youre willing to invest a bit more, and trust me its an investment, you can get even better gear. For example you can get an all american Fender Strat maple neck three single coil pickups highway one guitar (which is freaking AWSOME) for about 900-1000 $...

Rock on man

I'd suggest getting a true Fender if you go that way, because you'll be able to get most of your money back easier just because they're more desirable than a squier or some other knock off model. Better quality is also a plus and it keeps you playing. There is a debate going on about squiers being better because the substandard necks excercise your hand more and makes it easier to play better guitars like high end fenders or gibsons. I say just get a fender for your first guitar because it'll keep you playing until you want a better guitar, but who knows? You may never have the desire to sell it. Strat, tele, mustang, jaguar, jazzmaster, whatever, can't go wrong with a fender unless you are propoerty of gibson( :P ) (no offense to gibson players, I love firebirds espeacially but we are in fender camp right now so let's just have fun withum for now  )

Hope you find what you want. You could pick bass after all, just get what you want.
